Just started looking through, the commentary seems great so far. I like having Fan Hui's personal experiences on Lee Sedol's expressions and the feeling in the room.

Funny that the commented games are not identical to the actual games.
Code: Select all
$ sgfcmp -1 1.sgf 1c.sgf
warning: 1c.sgf flattened
comparing 1.sgf with the result of 'sgftf < 1c.sgf':
moves 2,4,180-183 : dd,dp,cj,al,nm,pm vs dp,dd,nm,pm,cj,al
This says that 1.sgf and 1c.sgf rotated by 180 degrees differ in 6 places.
In the actual game #1, move 2 was in a corner adjacent to that of move 1, in the commented game #1, move 2 was in the corner opposite to that of move 1.

And the actual game record did correctly record what happened in real life, namely playing the adjacent corner for move 2:

OK I just finished reading all of games and I applaud to Fan Hui, who is very open and embrace both ancient proverb and modern pro style, human and AI, the comments are almost poetry, celebrating the game of Go and welcoming our new companion AlphaGo on the journey of exploring the possibility of the game's nature.
Some of my questions are technical details, like in self-play games did AlphaGo use single machine or distributed version?

WOw, thanks for sharing this. I had no idea they commented on this one. I've been out of the igo front for a good while and want to get back into it. This may very well help me get the desire I need to try playing again.

I really hope that DeepMind will eventually print a boxed set of Blu-Ray disks with the videos from the five days (separated for the game room and the commentary room) in high-definition, the really nice commented PDF game records, the commented SGF files and other documentary content.
I'd buy it for sure - as much as the outcome shocked me to the core, there can be no doubt that the event was a momentous moment in the history of Go, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computing and humanity. It would sit very nicely next to my copy of Invincible.
Also, it was snowing and the cherry-blossom outside my office window was flowering while I was watching the streams. It was an unforgettable week.
