Option 4
Preloading the image doesn't work yet, but here is what the textured graphic looks like:

Hi Kirby,

For some reason I can only see the screenshot in the Hide tags.
I cannot see any of the first 4 diagrams (except for the codes).
( Safari, iOS. )

Hmm. I see the diagrams on Safari using iOS. Does refreshing the page work? Maybe it's due to the preload problem for the image... Could you see the image in the other thread about the prototype? Does refreshing work?

I'll remove the textured image version and just leave the screenshot.

Let me know if this is still a problem, and if it is, I'll make screenshots for all 4 options while I figure out the reason.

I see the problem using IE. Give me a few minutes to see what's up.

Hi Kirby,

Earlier today I could see the beta diagrams in the original thread.
But now, they don't show up in that thread, or here. :)
( I power-cycled the iPhone just now to double check. )

I see that IE is not working at least because I'm using the string "includes" function in javascript, which doesn't seem to be widely supported yet. I'm updating this for now and will be done in a few minutes. Is your safari version > 9?

Though, I am confused as to why you can see the images now but not later, since I didn't modify much other than the color.

Give it a shot now. I can see everything using IE11, Safari, and Chrome now. Does it work in your browser?

I can now see all 4 beta diagrams in Safari, iOS.

I vote for Option 1.

Kirby, am I seeing Options { 1,2,3 } with (existing) jagged circles,
and (beta) anti-aliased circles in Opion 4 ?

Is it possible to keep everything in Option 1, but add anti-aliased circles (and slanted lines) ? :)

Wait, maybe option 4 is just a screenshot,
and the circles just got blurred from low-res, and not from anti-aliasing ? :)

I didn't do anything explicitly to add anti-aliasing to any of the options - maybe it looks that way in Option 4 since it's a screenshot and some resolution may be lost. Anyway, I can smooth out the circles with any of the options, so I'll keep that in mind once we have a well-accepted format.

I don't vote for any of them at this time. The numbers are harder to read than the existing diagrams. Readability is the starting point. My suggestion would be to investigate Herman's svg graphics first. The sample is a startling improvement over what we have now.

Very Nice...

Further suggestions:

  • Use a Sans Serif font for the numbers and letters - possibly a bit smaller but with a higher font weight?
  • Fix the gaps around the stones and between stones. Why is there a gap? Or a border or halo or however it should be described.
  • Make the red colour a bit darker and more neutral - it isn't an error message, it's a red mark.

Thanks Kirby!

I voted for the first one but like ez4u I'd like for the numbers to be easier to read (maybe thicker?).

I agree with the others that we have readability problems and that the difference between the four examples is secondary compared to them. I want to add that the lines look quite blurry in my end.

I don't want to spit in the soup (French expression), thanks for your hard work.

Are the numbers and letters the main readability problem? Anything else that Charlie didn't mention?

Or would something exactly like Herman's be ideal? If that is what people like, we could use that format.

Nothing is that hard to do - I'm a bit clueless when it comes to the ideal look.

Hi Jhyn, (off topic)
to spit in the soup (French expression)
Do you think it's similar to...

  • Look a gift horse in the mouth ;
    -- or --
  • Splittng hairs ;

Or something else ? Just curious. :)
