Game Review Request

Post by BlindGroup »

Would someone have the time to check my assessment of this game? This was a hard fought game that was decided by 0.5 points.

My current take is that by the end of the fuseki my (black) position was quite good, but I then threw that away in the early middle game, barely catching up by the end. The key moves as I see it are the following:

1. Move 39. Up to this point, there were not surprise moves in the fuseki and I was happy with the final position. However, here I (unwittingly) changed strategy, deciding to save my isolated stone rather than sacrificing it to continue building influence. This effectively negated any advantage I had from the fuseki. I had chances at moves 51 and 53 to stem the bleeding, but I was to focused on keeping my group strong.

2. Move 73. This is the start of the sequence that put me down by about 10 points or so. I was too focused on capturing white's stone on top that I gave up much more important central influence.

Thanks in advance!

Hi BlindGroup,

:b15: The note here, "I also retain sente." Well...

After :b11: : both B and W have sente.
After :w12: : both B and W have sente.
After :b13: : both B and W have sente.
After :w14: : both B and W have sente.
After :b15: : both B and W have sente.
After :w16: : both B and W have sente.
After :b17: : both B and W have sente.
After :w18: : both B and W have sente.
After :b19: : both B and W have sente.

:b31: Maybe slow. :w30: ignored your :b29: , I'd consider R5, etc.
( Also, locally, maybe o16 ? )

:b39: S8. ( R10 follow-up. ) S8 affects both the stability of your cut-off group and W's corner: B Q2 could be sente later.
Your note here: up to :b37: the game feels quite even.

:b43: Weakness at Q13.

:b47: S11 has S13 follow-up for eye shape.

:b61: Your note here: top left corner very big.

:b63: This affects the relationship between F17 and K17.

:w70: E11 side may be bigger for W.

:b73: This is related to the position of :b63: .

:w78: This push not possible if :b63: was J16 kosumi.

:b87: Q2 big sente.

:b89: Before this, Q2. Then, locally maybe E4 peep and G5 combo.

:w90: P2.

Ed, thank you -- these are helpful!

A follow-up question if I may:

Would you explain this a little bit more? Are you suggesting that I should have played S11 at move 47 or are these suggestions for follow-up moves?

Hi BlindGroup,

Yes: the position of :b47: affects your eye shape.
If you're letting W cut off :b43: any way,
then :b47: at S11 has S13 follow-up.
( But I'm not sure what's best for :b47: here. )

Go to move 241. :)
