Sakai Hideyuki successfully steal Gosei from Cho U. He won the fifth game by 2.5 points.

What do you think about this? Does it mean that Cho is having a set back and losing his dominance at the Japan's scene slowly? Or just unluckily losing his grip at this title?

Or it could mean that Sakai is a very strong player. Cho is not invincible and has lost titles before. I cheer for Sakai who started his pro career in an unorthodox way, after completing his medical training and playing as a top amateur for years.

Perhaps Cho U is playing below form. I can't say for sure. But I'm more inclined to see this as a coup for Sakai than a blow for Cho. His record is still quite good this year.

White won every game in this series.

If i'm not mistaken I think i saw it somewhere in a commented game, it said it was a new way to play. But all i remember was that it said that black 11 hane at D2 was wrong.

Edit: Found it! It was in the game between USA and France in the WAGC 2010. (http://ranka.intergofed.org/?p=3804) Although it was not played like in this Gosei game... not even in the variations.
Edit 2: Oh, also, on the link Biondy posted, it says: "The joseki started at move 11 was similiar with the third game of the 35th Japanese Tengen title match. Cho was playing white at that time. Sakai varied at move 16. He played keima at F6 where Cho played a two spaces extension to (in this case) K3. Cho lost the game back then." Are moves 142 and 150 acceptable times to "use thickness to make territory"? Or is there something else about these moves i'm missing?

D2 does not look as good as the clamp at E3. Does anybody know how the joseki continues after E3?

this is fairly interesting news

i learned about sakai hideyuki from shuko's 'the only move' books, where he seems to be a favored student of shuko (but his games are always shown as examples of how not to play!)

Im not sure, but I like these moves. If white didnt play them, B can make more points in centre, so they are kinda double worth or something. This is only my untrained opinion... Can anyone see anything else here?
