Please see this mysterious game using a go board and go stones. The photo was found in a photo album from the thirties. The players are students at a Engineering High School.
Has anyone ever seen people playing "go" this way? Mark the "playing sticks" - would they propell the stones? Does tha game have a name? What are the rules?
I don't know the name of this game but I recall seeing it played at a go club many years ago. I think the goal was to slide your stones on the board to knock your opponent's stone off the board. Apparently the chop sticks are used to impel the stones. Probably a lot of chipped stones result from playing this.

Having a closer look at my photo it shows that black too has the line at his side filled with [black] stones. It seems play starts with black and white having 19 stones each at their first line. It looks like stones are "shot" by pressing on top of their rearside with the chopstick. Guessing that the winner is who first shoots all stones of his opponent off the board. Which may take a while to finish the last one...

Maybe a bit like the old pub game of Shove Ha'penny? But face-to-face instead of both shooting up the same board? Probly not a safe game to play in a pub atmosphere, with the opponent opposite.
But what are those two things standing on the board?
I never encountered it while living in Japan---fascinating!

Yeah... Spose so.
I was wondering if maybe they are further targets to hit, but that would spoil the simplicity of the game. Can't have that in a game involving a go board and stones, could we?
