You're American so it's reasonnable. Even in Europe, he's not well known from non football fans.

There are likely more nuances; for example, I knew of David Beckham (but just now couldn't recall the spelling of 'Beckham' without first confirming online). In general, I probably draw a blank on many sports names, regardless of the country origin.
