Look at the GPU cores and the 128 GB DDR5 RAM.

€4300 ~ 9200 for what a PC can achieve for €2200, unless you actually need to train a neural net and 128 GB VRAM-equivalent are useful so that a workstation would be in similar or larger price territory. Besides, software needs to be adapted to M1 Ultra.

Rather dream of 7970XT or 4090 actually becoming available (instead of immediately going to miners). I dream of 4070 because 4080 will have too high TDP. We have to wait whether Apple Studio is as silent under maximum load as the least noisy case fans at 37dB, which are the loudest PC component in a well configured aircooled 3080 PC.

Seems like spam advertisement as no discussion was presented and the product is hardly related to computer Go besides the fact that it is a computer and not even a good choice for computer Go.

But it should be perfect for lizzie gui and Katago neural network.

Do both simply run or must their code be adapted? Which Katago version would possibly work - OpenCL? Anyway, testing would help but who wants to spend the money?

Personally I think the killer box from Apple is the iPad Air 2022 announced this week. It has an M1 chip and starts at $600. I run A Master of Go on my old iPad Air 2 but it is definitely not up to it. So I expect to finally retire that old friend this summer.

Matthew Moniz compares Blender on the GPU for a Mac Studio with M1 Ultra to an I9-12900K and RTX 3080TI. Samples per minute, higher is better.

Code: Select all

Test PC Mac Factor

Classroom 1359 271 5.0
Junkshop 1570 273 5.8
Monster 2755 568 4.9

Average 5.2
