Apparently, Ryan Li was promoted to 4th dan three weeks ago.

It had skipped my notice, sorry.

Take care

Congratulations to Ryan on a well-deserved promotion.

Does anyone know if the North American or European professional systems have an upper limit on ranks that can be earned solely through internal competitions? Is it possible we could have a NA/European 9-dan where the promotion points are earned solely in domestic events without comparison to Asian competitors?

I don't remember the details, but EGF changes systems at 5p. The details were here, but I seem to recall something on the lines you ask.

Take care

Yes, up to 4d can be reached through internal competition. 5d to 8d only through earning points by qualifying top 16 and up in international pro tournaments. 9d only through winning an international tournament, which is actually harder than Eastern systems.

It seems quite reasonable: low dans can give an idea of internal ranking and merit, without sounding arrogant on the global field. Good results on the global field would merit higher dans.

The NAGF doesn't have a limit and doesn't reset points. Big wins (international) are worth more than small (regional-local) wins. But somene could theoretically reach 9d given enough time and wins in local and regional tournaments. The description is on their site.
