I miss tchan001's books

I liked his threads on chinese / japanese books at godiscussions.com .
Would he be best off to start it again here, or on a website of his own, or at SL?
The SL option would be good from the point of view of being a good place of record, but it doesn't do photos. They have to be hosted elsewhere.
I assume LifeIn19x19 keeps the pictures in line here, so this maybe better than SL.
Having his own website may suffer from the lack of a wider community interest, making it less motivating.

I think he should just put all of those wonderful pictures on a site like flickr; seems more suitable over a forum.

Hmm, for people archiving GD, those threads are the most important ones to save, I think...
I don't think it would be feasible to do it manually, though.

I chatted with him the other day on KGS and suggested he set up a blog. He seemed a bit disappointed that all the work he put into posting that stuff on GD is more-or-less lost, but he didn't say whether the blog idea interested him. We play often on KGS so next time I'll mention it again.

not if you're viewing only 10 posts per page

I always thought that having those threads on a forum was kind of silly--I didn't realize until now that they're probably unique reference material on Asian books.
The photos all appear to be hosted on photobucket anyway, so I vote for moving everything over to Sensei's Library, where this stuff really belongs anyway. If you view the printable view, e.g.:
http://www.godiscussions.com/forum/prin ... =40&page=1then it doesn't take too long to go through them. Somebody could write a quick screen-scraping script that converts to Sensei's Library format--then it's just a little cleanup afterwards.

Thanks for the tip. Switched to 40 posts per page, and saved the 3 book threads.

Ross, for that we'd have to ask tchan001 first, since it would imply putting the info under the SL copyright license.

Thanks for doing the work of archiving threads, Phelan. Ideally we'd have some script to convert them to some desired format (e.g. posts here, Sensei's articles, whatever), but that will take time and it's important to get the information archived before gd collapses completely. We can convert them to a more useful format (if necessary) at some point in the future.
BTW: Are you doing the completed Malkovich threads or just the ongoing ones?

For now I've only saved the Malkovich big brother and rengo, and the 3 tchan001 book threads (chinese+index, japanese, korean).
I stopped archiving Malkovich threads since Dusk Eagle had apparently already saved the ongoing ones (don't know which).
I still need to find the time and go through my "subscribed threads" and archive those. Lots of good info there as well.
Hope we can get a database backup from Don later, but for now...

I also would hate to lose the threads of tchan's library. It was really valuable as a reference when I made a recent order from amazon.co.jp, plus it's just fun to drool over.

I hadn't noticed before, but Ross's comment made me realize that tchan001 used a consistent approach of putting the photos on
photobucket, so it might be relatively easy to move the text to SL and link the previous photos. I'll try xed-over's suggestion of leaving tchan001 a message to see what he thinks.

I haven't decided what to do with my book threads yet. The info has been written over many months and it probably deserve a second look if I were to replace/update them elsewhere. I guess I should first at least back up my text and then figure out how to do restructure the info. The photos are all hosted on photobucket at the moment so it shouldn't be a big concern. I don't think it would be a good idea to just copy everything and load it on SL. It is my copyright and if I ever decide to use the info in a website, I probably would not want the info floating around out of my control.

Good to hear from you tchan001. Mull it over and update us here when you decide what you want to do.
