Life In 19x19

I'm at a friend's for the weekend and am unable to get into KGS games. Trying to login as a guest (which works elsewhere) fails right now. Because no one else has asked this yet (been several hours now) I suspect it's my friend's system configuration.

I get this message, after about 30-seconds:

The Server "goserver.gokgs.com" is refusing
connections. The server is probably down right now.
Please try again later.

In case it matters. Earlier I downloaded several of Tartare's games from the archive until I got an Apache error -- download limit -- which blocked my use of the archives.
Three hours after I downloaded more until the same error occurred again. arghh.

If this sounds familiar, or you know the magic bullet I'd appreciate hearing how to get in.

Mainly I want to register now as a new user.

Bit late, but it's currently up and the "Server Stats" page claims KGS has been up for the past 25 days.

Solved:

My friend's DSL router has a stateful firewall built in. I opened port 2379 with the following rules table entries.

added to OUTbound rules:
pass to port 2379 >> done

added to INbound rules:
pass protocol tcp, to port 2379 >> done

Everything fine after that.

Wouldn't that just tell you if the web site gokgs.com was down? The site can be up, but the game server can be down, in the same way that twitter can be functioning well enough to show you the fail whail, but not well enough to show you tweets.

It seems that the KGS server has been down for the last 3 hours. It is 11 am East Coast time in the US (EST), so that is a little unusual. (11:00am EST is 15:00pm GMT.)

Both the normal portal, http://www.gokgs.com/, and the secure portal, https://www.gokgs.com/, give the Apache Tomcat/6.0.24 error code 404: "The requested resource () is not available."

It's back

Not sure what happened. While I was sleeping the ISP noticed that KGS wasn't answering pings, and that the console wasn't accepting keyboard input. When I woke up and saw these I asked them to reboot, and (after fixing a couple corrupted database tables) it worked fine.
