Correct use of thickness?

Post by Akura »

In this game I played, I played the Chinese Fuseki as I'm trying to get used to it. After getting the wall on the right side, I tried to put my opponent under pressure as much as possible.
Of course I'm happy about any comments on the game, but my main question is:
Did I used my thickness correctly or was I just lucky, that my center territory was so big?

You used the thickness OK, but the major theme of that game was huge tactical blunders on both sides. :) If I have a minute and no one beats me I'll try and post a review...

You used your thickness fine. My recommendation: Do life and death problems until you run out of life and death problems, then find more and do those too. There were a ton of pass-moves here that could have been avoided with more reading.

Thank you both. Reading is my big weakness. I'm just through "Life & Death" of the Elementary Go Series and "Intermediate Level Problems" by Maeda Nobuaki which was quite hard on the first reading. Right now I'm reading "1001 Life & death Problems" for the second time, where I can handle most problems pretty good.
Does anyone has a suggestion for a good life and death book?
(goproblems.com and other webpages are ok, but I prefer books)

Edit: Added snapback that I missed at first.

Hit the problem books!

Also, you are likely stronger than your opponent in this game. You won by 47 and should have won by more like 87. Learn to read and you will go up a few levels quickly, I think.

I'm fond of Lee Changho's series of books - there are six of them that come together for life and death, ranging in difficulty from ~6k to ~2d.

Then I'll probably try one of Lee Changho's next, thank you.

@ daniel_the_smith:
Thank you very much for your review. Many of the mistakes you pointed at are very embarrassing, so I won't try to justify them. But what I want to say is, that :b13: was not a misclick, I just didn't see, that White can link up, until I played :b15:

Next I'll learn to read!! hopefully... :study: :study: :study:

90-93 makes me giggle.

90: Sure, my corner is in danger of being locked in and your group can just run towards thickness, but I steal your eye space! haHa!
91: Oh yeah, I pincer your pincering stone! I'm thick so I should have a good attack going.
92: What!? You can't do that! But I have a trick up my sleeve: behold the TRIPLE PINCER!
93: Ha, you fool, you ran right into my trap. I play the dreaded quadruple pincer! There's no more room on the board for another pincer. I win the pincer race!

Maybe others have other interpretations than mine :)

Something daniel didn't mention: at black 125, you have much better moves.
We don't know who we are; we don't know where we are.
Each of us woke up one moment and here we were in the darkness.
We're nameless things with no memory; no knowledge of what went before,
No understanding of what is now, no knowledge of what will be.

Gah, you're right, I read that L1 just barely fails but of course...
...K1 works just fine.

At 125 I considered L1, but of course in my head White gave atari at M1 leaving me no chance :grumpy:

Are these translated versions or original Korean books?
