Review, please! (1d vs. 1k)

Post by mw42 »

I thought I played okay, but it's clear I was behind going into yose. I had white; the game was played even. Result: B+8.5.

Thanks in advance.

only looked upto move 12 about to sleep sorry.

but try 12 at b5 ... b5 b4 c5 c4 suddenly black isn't alive locally and you can just jump out to say e7 and induce and extension for your lower side group while your left side group got stronger as well, as black flails in no mans land.

In a nutshell, your play is very soft. You're getting ripped off all over the place and not taking advantage of his weaknesses.

I think your basic problem in this game was creating weak groups, which your opponent was able to attack for profit. Some specific examples:

Look at the board after move 35 and again after move 57. The lone W stone on the left side has escaped, but now W has nine stones accomplishing nothing except to deny B a small side territory. In compensation, B has nine stones controlling the center and casting influence over the entire top half of the board. To avoid this disaster, W must either find a better way to settle this group or play elsewhere, giving up one stone for the time being.

Move 66 is the wrong direction. There is much more open space at the top of the board to stake a claim. Note that the left side is susoaki -- B needs two moves (C14 and C8) to make much territory there.

Move 70 denied B a small territory and again got a weak W group into trouble. Better would be to block at O7, to get some counterplay when B cuts, or to play a move in the center which helps this group make shape and eye space. Despite some tactical mistakes, B profited from the attack on both the right side (W exchanged P13 for Q14) and in the center (stones at M11 and M12).

Thanks for the comments. Maybe I do get a little timid when I see that "1d" next to my opponent.

By the way, black normally plays :b11: at B5 to avoid letting you play there. Then, if white C2, black C9, and if white C10, black C2.
We don't know who we are; we don't know where we are.
Each of us woke up one moment and here we were in the darkness.
We're nameless things with no memory; no knowledge of what went before,
No understanding of what is now, no knowledge of what will be.
