The GoGoD partnership is proud to announce, after 10 years of operation, another milestone in our sgf database of professional games on cd, having exceeded 70,000 games. Many of these are modern Japanese, Chinese and Korean games which are not published on the internet, but we have also been delving back into Korean history, to find early games by Cho Hun-hyeon, Seo Pong-su, Kim In, Cho Nam-ch’eol as well as a rare sunjang baduk game from the 1970’s to add to our existing collection of such games played under ancient Korean rules, and previously unknown games from a visit Takagawa Shukaku made to Korea. These obviously do not appear in the collected games of Takagawa. One effect of the growth is that we now have to use two CDs, one for the database and one for the encyclopaedia, but at no extra cost to our customers.

As always, the Encyclopaedia has been updated extensively with more details of tournaments and events. We have now updated the software that can optionally be used to access the database. Two new fast programs allow (1) accessing the database as a database - searching on all the header data in various ways, and (2) a smarter version of the Go Names biographical dictionary (now over 4,000 entries) which allows even faster and easier lookup of Oriental characters. The encyclopaedia contains several new and highly unusual additions to the Rules Incidents feature (including in this past semester and not mentioned on L19), and our first example of a mirror game in pro handicap play (from 1947).

We are making the announcement earlier this year, so that you can get your Christmas present early. Please contact me at tmark at gogod.demon.co.uk for further details. All our current subscribers will also receive their copies, Post Offices permitting, before Christmas.

Forgive the senior moment, but I forgot to mention an unusual game I found in a Korean magazine. The players were Yi Hong-yeol (W) versus Yi Hong-yeol (B) with a commentary by Yi Hong-yeol. All three persons had the same Chinese characters making up their names. One later becaome a professional, but I'll leave you in suspense as to which one.

Best wishes.

Are you doing a calendar this year? I have really enjoyed using the 2011 GoGoD calendar.

I don't think so; it was rather difficult getting reasonable quality photos which were either our copyright or out of copyright for the 2011 calendar.

Best wishes.

Awesome T Mark! 70,000 games is a huge achievement. I'm looking forward to getting my copy :).

Cheers,

That would be like the Nihon Ki-in calendar having the same prints year after year. I think people want a bit more variety.

Best wishes.

Ya'know, I love the GoGoD collection and buy subscriptions to support the work Mark and John do, but I can't say I would buy a calendar with same pictures on it year after year. Ya gotta draw the line somewhere :D.

out of curiosity, where is it possible to obtain reasonable quality photos regardless of a copyright? i thought about making one calendar just for myself (and i suppose then i wouldn't have to be concerned with copyright), but i have no idea where to find good photos for it

Many photos on Wikipedia may be free. Each photo has a page explaining its copyright status. So that's one source. There are probably much better ones.

ah, i haven't expressed myself very clearly. i have never seen the GoGoD calendar and i meant a calendar similar to the one by Nihon ki-in i saw recently - with pro players or with photos from pro matches

but doesn't matter, i guess there are not many such photo galleries laying around on the web :)

I thought there were more photos of players on there, but I guess there aren't.

I've bought several of the Tacoma Go Club calendars (reminds me, I need another for this next year), and it uses the same pictures every year.
