Life in 19x19 Title Tournament

Dear all,

Jordus had the excellent idea of a forum title tournament, and following some discussions, I'm putting forward the idea for comments, responses, and signups.

The idea in principle is that we have a double-elimination tournament (so one loss puts you in the losers bracket, another puts you out of the tournament) that is open to all, with stronger players entering in later rounds. The current format, if we can get 48 entrants, and courtesy of Herman's proposal in this thread is as follows:

Round 1 -> Group 1 play Group 2, winners progress, losers form the first 8 in the loser's bracket
Round 2 -> Winners play Group 3, winners progress, losers form the second 8 in the loser's bracket
Round 3a -> Winners play Group 4, winners progress, losers drop into the loser's bracket, to play...:
Round 3b -> The winners of the first round in the loser's bracket between the losers in the first two rounds. Losers in the loser's bracket are eliminated
Round 4a -> Winners play Group 5, winners progress, losers drop in the loser's bracket
Round 4b -> 2nd Loser's bracket round, winners stay in, losers are eliminated
Round 5a -> Winners play Group 6, winners progress to the final 8, losers drop in the loser's bracket
Round 5b -> 3nd Loser's bracket round, winners stay in, losers are eliminated
Round 5c -> 16 player's in the loser's bracket, 8 get eliminated
Round 6a -> Final 8 for the winner's bracket, 4 go through, 4 drop
Round 6b -> Loser's bracket - 8 winners from 5c play, 4 get eliminated
Round 6c -> Loser's bracket - 4 winners from 6b play the 4 losers from 6a, 4 get eliminated
Round 7a -> Final 4 for the winner's bracket, 2 go through, 2 drop
Round 7b -> Loser's bracket - 4 winners from 6c play, 2 get eliminated
Round 7c -> Loser's bracket - 2 winners from 7b play the 2 losers from 7a, 2 get eliminated
Round 8a -> Final 2 for the winner's bracket, 1 goes through to the grand final, 1 drops
Round 8b -> Loser's bracket - 2 winners from 7c play, 1 gets eliminated
Round 8c -> Loser's bracket - winner from 8b plays loser from 8a, winner progresses to the grand final at a 1-0 disadvantage
Round 9 -> First to 2 wins between the winner of 8a and the winner of 8c, with the winner of 8a starting with 1 win at 1-0.

This way everyone technically has a chance of winning the whole tournament, but no-one should end up playing people far out of their ability range (unless they do really really well!)

It's possible to play a grand total of 14 games (win round 1, lose round 2, win 3b, 4b, 5b, 5c, 6b, 6c, 7b, 7c, 8b, 8c, and then the first game in round 9), but it's pretty unlikely!

So, firstly, who's interested in the tournament, and secondly, please can you place votes on the time controls that suit you best. There's 7 options for time controls, and a corresponding "not this one" set of options for people who simply wouldn't participate if the time controls were that long or short. The format is {initial time} + {stones}/{minutes} canadian overtime. Obviously byo-yomi is possible too, but it was to get a feel for time preferences.

Please consider this thread a sign up thread too ;)

Depends on the takeup. Probably aim to get each game round done within a fortnight if possible, but there will have to be some lag time.

Sounds like fun! Man, it'd be fun to progress to the next set so you could get slaughtered by someone several stones stronger.

Edit: I'm not set on times specifically, however, I like having 30 seconds byo-yomi. It's mostly just what I'm used to.

Rank is 7k, moving towards 6k.

How about increasing time limits for later rounds? Play the first five rounds (the entry rounds) at a relatively quick pace, then slowly add time in later rounds. Start with the 30 min, for example, then add 5-10 minutes per round after the 5th, with a corresponding decrease in stones/period (You'd need to know the number of participants before deciding on increases).

I'll play regardless though, I guess :)

Online tournaments keep beckoning to me. The Go Gods must want me to get off my butt (well, or stay in my chair) and participate. Now, I haven't played on KGS (or any real-time server) in years. My KGS rating doesn't exists. Is that okay? (I'm probably in the 5-7K bracket.)

Will we have our own room to play in?

Edit; As for timing, I'd have liked to see 40 + 20/5 as an option. That's about my size.

I'd love to be in it! Although I'll have to think about if I can cope with Canadian Overtime - I can't, actually. I hate to always keep an eye an my seconds and the stones I need to play. There's nothing more distracting.

But besides that, I like HermanHiddema's suggestion of getting more time as the tournament progress'. Starting with 30 minutes and 5*1 minutes Byo-Yomi =)

I'm willing to throw in something to a prize pool if we want to have one; maybe KGS+ and/or some of the newer Go books like Cho Hye-yeon's Creative L&D?

I'm also willing to video-review games from the first 3 rounds.

All the time limit options seem incredibly slow. I doubt I would be able to play in it because there is just no way I could guarantee in advance that much time in one block. On the rate occasion when I can find a lot of spare time in one block I usually have to limit the clock to 1/5 or faster.

Also, shouldn't you be asking people to indicate their rank when they sign up? Perhaps people should go back and edit their sign up entry to indicate this.
