hi,
I have a feeling I have seen an approx 1 sun slotted board somewhere. I tried to look for one in the online stores, but all I could find were the thin (perhaps about 1cm) boards. Any information, anyone?

SLotted boards are limited in thickness by the assumption they are portable. My 1" is about as much mass as I wish to carry. If I wanted to impress or intimidate or just brag, I'd bring a table board to the club. My table board is made of dense purpleheart (bragging here) and it masses like 20-30 pounds.
I have no idea what a sun is.

Kiseido used to sell these but their current online inventory doesn't list them. But they might be able to get one for you. They are still available, as shown on this Japanese page for the Nihon Ki-in online shop:
http://item.rakuten.co.jp/nihonkiin/005b/ This board has a 19x19 grid on one side and 13x13 on the other. The price is a bit more than $80.00USD, not including shipping. The board is made of agathis wood.

So a sun is one inch? Sheesh. Now define a cubit.
An $80 dual-grid, slotted board of agathis is a good bargain. Buy it.

Thanks for replies.
Interesting comments about units of length. I don't get the fuzz, the inch is also a non-SI unit.

A
sun is part of the old pre-metric Japanese system of measurement known as
shaku-ho. See this Wikipedia page for more info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_u ... easurement There you will see that a
sun is about 30.3 mm or 1.19 inches. So it's a little more than one inche but for a rough estimate 1
sun = 1+ inch is a reasonable rule of thumb, especially if the barley has large grains

Methinks you put decimal in the wrong place…

Oops! Fixed it. Should be mm, not cm
