Weiqishaonian is a terrible, terrible series at every layer and from every angle. I tried to watch it for the hilarity, but stopped when I couldn't decide whether to cry from laughter or from my loss of faith in Chinese animation.
It wouldn't surprise me if the solution is to die in gote - have you looked at the board states it shows?
Edit: though, if you give episode number and approximate time, I can take a look.

Contrary to what remains of my good sense, I tracked down an episode guide and found the encounter in episode 14 (near the end, if for some reason anyone else is interested).
Yes, it is what he said. It was something like "must first go to a place without hope before life may be found" (terrible translation by me, it's an idiom from a battle fought in Han).
Strangely enough, the board actually did show a bulky five local death, which far exceeds my expectations on the quality of the series (though, of course, the board state changes randomly in seconds). Of course, "dying in gote" makes no sense because the group apparently escapes.

Attached for your entertainment. Probably two screenshots would have sufficed, but after watching that segment again I felt I need to do more to fully convey my feelings.
