It's nice that there's a friendly go forum available.

I am a high school student from the Irvine, California area. May 2012 will be my 6th month playing. I'm a kgs 9ish kyu.

My goals:

Short Term Beat: my uncle, an aga 8kyu player consistently , get a floor goban (cheap)

Long Term: Reach Kgs Shodan , get a floor goban (masame kaya)

I feel like the go community in my area kinda sucks. Our local club hasn't had meetings in forever.
I'll be going to China over the summer, so hopefully I can get some affordable teaching or something.
I've been trying to teach my fellow high schoolers some go and start a community at my school. (My efforts seem to be failing.)

Alhambra, Monterey Park, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Los Angeles areas should have a few Go clubs.
There used to be a regular (monthly?) AGA rated tourney in Alhambra... dunno if it's still there.
It's also likely there are a few high dans in UCI's grad school or post-docs...
but maybe it's not so easy to hunt them down.

Yeah, I went to the one that closed down at the Irvine Chinese Cultural building a while ago and only a couple people showed up. There are a lot of strong players in that area, but unfortunately there's not much of a community since everything is so spread out.

Keep working at it and hopefully you can help build something that lasts.

Once summer comes I should be able to drive to LA areas to attend meetings. My area sucks!

I am up in the yorba linda area all the time (not too far from Irvine I believe). I am also around 9k. If you want to meet up and play some games sometime send me a message and I'll try to work something out.
