Is go really that bad?

I returned from my go club a couple of nights back and left my portable goban on the back seat of my car. The car was in a secure underground car park and the security is such that no car had ever been broken into.

The goban comes in a nice bag.. the stones and bowls are good and the board is often commented on .. it is aesthetically pleasing. The set retails at about £250.

The next morning I went to the car. Someone had smashed my window using a concrete slab - damaging the door badly. My goban was gone. :( I was upset...

I turned around and made my way back to call the police - then I saw it. The bag and goban had been unceremoniously dumped. The thieves didn't want it.

Clearly go is a very very unpopular game...

This Goban bag didn't look a bit like a laptop bag? Of course you might want to try an experiment and leave a chess board next time.

Sorry to hear about your damages.

You should never leave anything of value or apparent value in your car when parking in a car park. I know people who have gotten their windows smashed for the change in their cup holders.

Its also a good motivation to keep your car clean :P

reminds me of this FML:
Today, my house got broken into. They just made a mess. I saw a note on the kitchen table that read "There's nothing good here. You have shitty stuff." FML

sorry for your car

harsh :(

At least on the bright side your go gear remains yours! At work we have a running joke about stuff that could be potentially stolen: A car filled with unmarked boxes of miscellaneous stuff worth 100k or more, and if a thief were to break in, they'd steal the iPhone on the dash board and nothing else. If they can't figure out what it is or what it is for, they don't want it - even if it is worth much more. They're simply ignorant and their black market fences probably are too.

If it makes you feel better, if I had broken into your car, I'd definitely have kept your go set. The thief probably had no idea what it was, what it was worth, or where to sell it.
