seems necessary, to preserve the usefulness of the two stones to the left.

I would be tempted to continue with directly in the diagram below to probe B response. If B defends as shown below, W gets to make a nice framework, and the B corner still has cutting points. I do not think B can invade at (a) after this sequence.

If B counter-attacks as in the diagram below, W can handle the fight. While B runs with the cutting stones and lives in the corner, W should be able to make territory and protect the weakness at (a).

in the diagram below is a huge point for both sides, but I think the unsettled upper left situation takes precedence. If B gets a chance to invade first, the two W stones to the left could turn from strength into weakness.
