Help me get unstuck

Hi all
I currently feel my playing has deteriorated a lot. It seems that every game I play I loose by a (relatively) small margin of points.
I think I'm making some bad decisions that I _really_ can't see in direction of play in the early game and especially middle game.
I'm attaching a typical game played on kgs that I think shows most of the problems.
Can you guys give me some pointers ?

Thanks!

You forgot to say whether you're black or white.

From what I've seen, black seems to play his stones way too close in the opening, but since it's a strange position anyway, I'm not sure if it is appropriate.

I don't see many problems with white's opening. The only thing I didn't like was the atari at B16, seems premature. Just descending to B15 would be better, I think.

Oh, and you can embed the game in the thread for more convenient viewing, if you want to:

Edit: Or so I thought... I must be missing something with the embedding.

Sorry, you're right. I'm White.

I agree about the atari, was a mistake.

(and I did try embedding, but it's not working for me either)

Here is a brief commentary on the first 100 moves or so, with variations:

edit: embedding doesn't seem to work, so I uploaded it to eidogo:

White 20 absolutely must be at D18. As Kageyama says, cutting and connecting is the first fundamental. Similarly 42 should be at S15.

edit: by the way using EidoGo is awesome, just open the game in another tab, really easy to use.

Just found out some systems save games with hidden linebreaks added in. I will try to have this fixed within the day. *edit* I may not be able to get to it until tomorrow. I have to finish up some hw, study for a test then go school

Ah, you mean the dreaded ^M character

just run it through a dos2unix filter upon upload (or sed or perl)

Code: Select all

perl -pi -e 's/rn/n/;'

I tried to use the [ sgf ] tags first, but couldn't get them to work.

edit:
[ sgf ] tags do not like the embedded url -> http://www.gokgs.com/

hi, I guess you are white.

The first odd move is 8. What is your purpose with that move?

Move 10 seems you are afraid. There is nothing to be afraid of, since white can always escape to the centre. So take a big point instead.

Move 60 does not accomplish much, since black has a stone at R8. So T13 is better. At this point, black has a huge top side already. There are a couple of black groups you can attack: the middle left side and the middle lower side. They are both weaker than the right side black group. That is because your neighbouring groups are stronger there.
