Hey gang. I just played this game and I thought I did quite well until I lost (granted, by only 6.5 points I think). Still, I felt good all the way. Where did I go wrong? I'm white.

Same as Joaz Banbeck on the sequence in the upper left.

I would add that moving the q14 stone with :w42: only creates a weak group you had to care about for a long time. And looking at where b points are in the end, it seems that the stones he placed while chasing this group were useful to him.

The immediate cause of your loss was that you did not play L17 and capture three stones at the end of the game (if Black connects you catch five stones in a shortage of liberties with L18). :blackeye:

Thanks so much for your help guys. It seems that some of the common threads here are that I don't value corners enough and I play a little over-ambitiously. If I'm correct, only one of my moves that you reviewed, Joaz, was slow.

ez4u, I can't believe I didn't see that opportunity at the end. Getting that would have made all the difference.

Note that going back to the original corner, White can play A18 in reply to B19 and capture Black. The classic defect at B14 means Black needs four plays to capture from the left side so you have time to capture the top stones. Black might hane at the top for a ko but there are no ko threats so early in the game.

A variation for the top left corner. :)

Happy New Year everyone!!

You guys were so helpful I thought I'd come back and ask for more help. :D

Again, I'm not sure where I went wrong. Did I handle the top right well? What could I have done better there? I don't seem to do well when my opponent plays three stones on one side, since I don't feel I can invade but I can't seem to make up for the loss later on.

I'd also like some more general advice on my play, if possible, based on these two games... what should I be studying in particular right now?
