Human go player akiratoya92 defeated a version of the computer program GnuGo yesterday by a score of 14.5 points, after being given a 3-stone handicap. The game was available to view on KGS.
The victory represents real progress for akiratoya92. In an interview, his teacher Lijun Yi expressed confidence that akiratoya92 would soon be able to defeat a computer program in an even game.
"We're very pleased that all the work we've been putting into improving akiratoya92's play is really paying off," Mr. Yi said. Mr. Yi pointed, in particular, to a breakthrough in reading skills that reduced the number of random, pointless moves played by akiratoya92. "We feel that we're making progress at a rate faster than expected. Before these robots know it, akiratoya92 is going to be breathing down their necks."
GnuGo declined to comment for this report.
