Peng Liyao's opponent is Yu Zhengqi, who takes over Cho U's place.

Choi Cheolhan is playing using wheel chair instead of regular chair.
He was injured while he was playing soccer.

Choi delayed his surgery to play this tournament.

Well done An Jeongki for beating Chen Yaoye 9p, not just amateur beating a pro but one of the top dozen pros in the world! Pic (and past victims) here viewtopic.php?p=186323#p186323. Who is he playing next?

It's even more impressive than an amateur who makes the Friday cut at a major golf tournament.

Can anyone explain what are the different ways that Korean amateurs can accumulate these points? Are they specific to certain tournaments? Are they accumulated across tournaments? Did An have a certain number before the LG Cup? Anything additional about the system really would be appreciated.

I would say MUCH more impressive.

There are quite a few amateur "scratch" golfers out there. People who at some earlier stage in life decided that they didn't have enough talent to become a top pro and so would become a doctor, a lawyer, an army officer, or whatever instead of a club pro. Remember, just two par or just below rounds would likely make the cut.

I am sure you are right that it is much more impressive. However, I am pretty sure that most amateur golfers who make the cut are college students who will turn pro after finishing college. Pro-configured courses make a mockery of mortal weekend scratch golfers.

Anyway, we agree. Much.

Well not exactly what I was saying. And perhaps my sense of "how courses set up" differs because pof growing up next to a couple that were competition courses 20's-30's and not very different from then (because mostly in aspects of the designs that couldn't readily be made easier).

So no, I was meaning those college scratch golfers, many of whom will NOT end up turning pro but will instead choose to become professionals of another sort. Maybe they would have judged differently if they they thought they had enough talent to become a TOP pro, but sub-cultural values play a role in this too.

This isn't unlike the surprise for some of us when posted in another part of this forum that a certain professional football player was a published mathematician. HE chose to do professional sports first and academics on the side. But many/most in that situation might choose the other way around, especially when the sport is one regularly played at the amateur level. Such people are of course in demand as partners for pro-am events. And it's not only sports. Thus I knew a local (good sized) factory owner good enough to be invited to sit in when a big name jazz band was in town.

In all fairness, I think that surprise was due to the well known phenomenon of recruiting players to a university to play football who would not have been able to enroll there on academic merit alone, and then giving them easy classes that are very leniently graded to allow them to keep playing football. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough...

I'm not familiar with the system, but I did a google search, and found this doc describing "Improvements to the Pro Entrance System" (I grabbed the cached version, since it's an HWP file):
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... clnk&gl=us

One section is outlined in that doc, which seems to describe the way you calculate points:
Quote:

Which basically seems to equate to the following (assuming I understand it correctly - feel free to correct me):

* You can accumulate points at any of the open tournaments where amateurs can play with pros for prize money.
* Points are valid for 1 year. So if you accumulated some points, but then more than a year has passed, you lose those points.
* For a given open tournament:
- If you pass the amateur selection for the tournament: 5 points
- Combined prelims: (multiplier) * 5 points
- Advance to the finals: 10 points + (multiplier) * 20 points

It's not clear to me how the multiplier is calculated, but I believe on another doc, I saw that if you pass 100 points, you're pro.

Correction:
* For a given open tournament:
- If you pass the amateur selection for the tournament: 5 points
- Combined prelims: (Number of wins) * 5 points
- Advance to the finals: 10 points + (Number of wins) * 20 points

This article was published in 12/1/2010. So I am not sure if this is the latest and correct.

Winner of Open amateur tournament(KPMC, World Amateur tournament, and Japan world amateur tournament) will get 40 points.

And for open pro tournament(this doc gave BC card cup(defunct) as sample.),
semi-final of prelim - 5 points
final of prelim - 10 points
Main tournament;
round of 64 - 20 points
round of 32 - 40 points
round of 16 - 60 points
round of 8 - 100 points

Many open tournaments have different format so awarding points will
be different.
Also for points gotten before 12/1/2010, points gotten from open pro tournament will be multiplied by 20 and 50% of current points will be given for Open amateur tournament.

Very confusing !!!!!!!!

Thanks for the correction, trout.

In retrospect, it should have been obvious to me that 승수 is the number of wins. That makes a lot more sense. :)

I found this other doc here:
Code:
http://www.baduk.or.kr/admin/temp/up_file/%EC%9E%85%EB%8B%A8%EC%A0%9C%EB%8F%84%20%EC%B5%9C%EC%A2%85%20%EA%B0%9C%ED%8E%B8%20%EA%B3%B5%EC%A7%80(2011.1.11).doc

Notably, it says this:
Quote:

I believe that this means that points are awarded differently depending on the tournament.

Also, I found it interesting that there are two ways to get "special" pro admission. One is the system as described above, and the other:
Quote:

So I guess the committee can give you special-case approval.

Also:
Quote:

The chart is formatted screwy above, but it looks like people with the top points can also get special seeding for the regular pro entrance tournament.

Does that sound right to you, trout?

Yes, 10 players with highest accumulated points are seeded to pro exam's main tournament for general public.
