Re: Future projects on KGS

I'd love for there to be an option to turn the byo-yomi warning sounds to 'five, four, three, two, one' rather than 'beep beep beep beep beep'.

Think I would lose fewer games on time that way.

Re: 0.5

Is this really strange or is it just me?

Don't mean to put a damper on the your cool (or should I say 'not cool'?) experience...

But even though losing by 0.5 is quite rare, the fact that it happened twice in a row is not strange. Coincidences happen all the time. We only tend to notice ...

Never played on LGS myself, but weiqi players I knew in Taiwan all used it.

Probe examples

So – I’ve been trying to get my head round the concept of probes.

I’ve read the Sensei’s Library page, and the relevant chapter in Strategic Concepts of Go by Yoshiaki Nagahara.

In the abstract, I understand the idea of a probe as a move that forces the opponent to settle his shape (i.e. choose ...

Re: What do you think of sensei's library

I used SL a lot as a beginner, and am still fond of it.

I use it to look up joseki, or life and death of common corner patterns.
Sometimes I just try to get my head round some of the the more advanced topics in there (e.g. tedomari, thousand year ko, eternal life, etc)

SL is messy in places ...

Hello, Hey & Howdydoodahday

I've been a lurker here (and previously GoDiscussions) for years, but only now felt like getting more involved. I've already made a few posts, but feel I should say hello properly.

I’m from England, and currently live in London.

I started to play Go over five years ago. I was hooked from the ...

Another thing is that turn-based matches are just really very different from real-time games. Especially if you play a number of them simultaneously, each move becomes a whole board problem ...

Re: An Expression of Personality

I'm quite skeptical of this often-heard claim that one's personality is reflected in a game of go.

Sure, people have different playing styles. But couldn't 'style' mostly be said to be an accumulation of knowledge and habits gained from experience?

My style these days favours 5-4 and 4-4 points ...

Re: learning together?

Yes, I think it's good to learn with friends who are also beginners. But Magicwand makes a good point, that you'll improve faster playing stronger players.

Making sure you understand the rules is the first step. Then you can play with your friends. A little later, if you want to improve more ...

Re: How many games do you have within yourself?

I also find I can only play one or two games per day at maximum strength. Perhaps three if I have the whole day to devote to go. Any more than that and my concentration and reading deteriorates.

I sometimes play many games in a row (especially over a board) but I don't really enjoy games when one ...

Re: Chinese Japanese rules the same right? Win lose wtf?

in general the score differs by at most 1 point, but there are ways to get it to differ by more.
in particular, if you play in your own territory to unnessicarily prevent invasion, under territory rules, each such move would cost you a point, under area, your score stays the same.

This is only ...
