Go vs. Shogi

... in the very literal sense.

I saw these linked on Takodori's Entrance to Shogi World, and thought they were worth sharing.

Latest Tom Go Server Software

Hello All,

I occasionally used to log in to the Tom Go Server (duiyi.tom.com). Until recently I've been quite familiar with running the LiveBaduk executable in compatibility mode (Windows 2000) and through AppLocale to force it to Chinese language.

I recently started playing Go again after a break ...

gostream.org domain (will be) available

Hello All,

I just received an auto-renewal notice from my domain registrar for the domain gostream.org. I bought this a few years ago for a go-related project that never saw the light of day.

I thought that I'd post here in case anyone was interested in owning the domain. I'll be letting it lapse ...

Re: Xiangqi or Shogi?

Don't let Wikipedia fool you. Even though Xiangqi is technically more popular, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything about it in English. There are much fewer xiangqi resources in English than shogi (and even in shogi we're kind of hard-pressed for resources).

I'm a shogi player, so I'm ...

Re: Xiangqi or Shogi?

There is a xiangqi cartoon, but you'll have to speak Mandarin to understand it. It's called 象棋王 ( http://www.hong-ying.com/xqw/xqw_upload/index.htm ).
Actually, at least episode one on Tudou has English subs m

Re: Xiangqi or Shogi?

I would say that there are advantages to both. To my mind, Xiangqi is a simpler (but certainly not simple) game, and tends to be more directly violent. There often seems to be a short manouvering phase before suddenly the board explodes and everything dies.

Shogi is more complex, but the games ...

Re: Would you consider yourself physically healthy?

(I don't think it's wise to not give kids meat.)

No offence, but I didn't want to leave this statement out there without disputing it (assuming that it's based on nutritional rather than moral or philosophical reasons). I'm raising my twins vegetarian, and I looked into it very carefully when ...

Re: Would you consider yourself physically healthy?

The paper referenced from the Wikipedia article is well worth a read, regarding the Popeye/spinach link: http://www.internetjournalofcriminology.com/Sutton_Spinach_Iron_and_Popeye_March_2010.pdf . (I love papers like that.)

There are also far more subtle issues related to how much ...

Re: Would you consider yourself physically healthy?

There are lots of things that doctors get wrong. Fortunately, most of them are not life-threatening. There are lots of ideas that have become common that turn out to be false. (The NYT has a column where they look at health myths and say whether they are true or false.)

For example, the myth that ...

Re: Visiting New York

Hey.

I got to the Botanical Gardens, but the queue was absolutely huge and I really couldn't face standing in it for the hour+ that it looked like taking. I did have a nice walk around Prospect Park, though, so it was worth the trip.

Sorry to miss you all -- maybe next time. :)

Re: Visiting New York

Hey guys,

As far as I can tell, weather allowing, we will be meeting to play go in the Brooklyn Botanical Garden next saturday.

There is a cherry blossom festival, so we will be playing, and hopefully making some new players as well.

Well, I'm here (and have been for a few days). I like ...

Re: Visiting New York

Hey All,

Thanks for all the offers! Actually, my CouchSurfing request came through, so I'll have a place to stay. I will have a few days free in New York, though, and hopefully I'll get a chance to meet up with some of the local Go players. I've already had a great offer of Go in Central Park. I'll ...

Re: Visiting New York

Thanks for posting your schedule, tealeaf.
I'm sure we can arrange some sort of sending off on Saturday before your flight. We have a friendly group that occasionally meets on weekends.

Weather permitting, we might be able to make use of the tables and Chess and Checkers house in Central Park ...

Re: Visiting New York

I'm arriving in New York on the evening of the 25th April, and then have the conference for a two full days. That means that I have Thursday 28th, Friday 29th and (most of) Saturday 30th in New York. I fly out of JFK airport at 22:35 on the 30th.
