KGS on Ubuntu

I wrote up instructions for how to install the cgoban KGS client on Ubuntu on my blog that might be of interest. The information on the KGS website is sketchy, outdated, and contradictory, and I didn't find any other instructions around, so I thought what the heck...

Re: Lee Sedol Submits Resignation Letter to Korean Pro Go As

I think one shouldn't judge a master strategist until well into yose. However it turns out, that'll most likely be exactly what he was aiming at.

Re: Drinking 抹茶 (matcha)

I think it's important to have a nibble of something sweet before drinking the tea. It knocks the edge off, so you can taste the nice vegetal flavour even if your water was a little too hot and the tea is a little too bitter. Better than if the water was too cool, to my taste.

Re: Looking for a modern basic joseki book

If you're looking as a beginner, I found Baduktopia's Joseki Jeongseok Compass 1 a really nice start. It gives a review of past joseki to play out, a new basic joseki, errors and follow-ups and maybe a variation or older version that's still okay, some step by step exercises, then some openings with ...

Re: Html5 Go Board Wow!

Incredible stuff. Love the chrome plug-in. I'm planning on starting up my Go blog again next week (I hope, but soon anyway), and I'll definitely be excitedly telling people about you. Assuming anyone's still reading me.;)

Re: How not to promote a go club in the middle of nowhere

Think how hard Tsuitsui-san worked, and he lived in Japan.

You're just planting seeds, too. A first exposure that is positive, even if it doesn't hold, might still grow a Go player some day, even if you don't know about it. Of course that doesn't help the Go club today.

The posters are nice. I ...

... don't accidentally get level up jump, those are for much stronger players. And the answer keys are available to download on the baduktopia website (or used to be), but have issues printing out properly with newer updates of adobe acrobat ... but I used foxit to print them out just fine.

Great ...

I signed up, but can't sign in. Retrieved password just in case, and still can't sign in.

If there's a waiting period, okay, but the sign-up instructions are still all in Dutch, and my Dutch isn't that good, so maybe I messed that up.:)

Canadian Open 2014

In a few days, I'll be leaving the Yukon to head down to Vancouver to take part in the biggest Go tournament in Canada, the Canadian Open!

Yes, I'm excited about it. But I'm wondering what I can expect? There has been virtually no propaganda about this tournament and/or any events surrounding it ...

Re: Equipment

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I'm hoping, if I can put some cash aside, to pick up some equipment at the Canadian Open at the end of the month. Though I've no idea if there are supposed to be vendors there, I'm hoping. So I wanted some idea of what's needed, and what it's going to cost.

For ...

For clubs that own some standard equipment ... well, what is standard equipment for your club? How much did you spend per set?

Re: your typical club attendance and rank distribution?

Whitehorse Go Club has been in existence since I declared it existed just this past October; we currently have between four and eight players show up, I'd estimate our ranks at three 6-9 kyu, a couple 14-17 kyu, and two or three 20-25 kyu. We also get a newbie or two show up every few weeks who may ...

Re: Mirror Mirror

It is actually mirroring, flipping the board. Think of looking at your game being replayed as if you were underneath the board and looking up through it! The command line editor would fix the file forever, for sure, but I'm lazy about such things, and looking at drago more closely, it does have a ...

Mirror Mirror

Saving a game from Panda Egg 2 by clicking on save after a game is over saves an sgf file with the game mirrored on the horizontal plane. Not turned around, mirrored in one plane only, such that if I play the first stone on the upper-right hoshi, it appears on the lower-right hoshi. Is there any way ...
