2 stone difference* means 50% win probability when the opponent has 2 stones on the board, 3 stones mean 50% when they have 3 stones on the board and so on.
Except that this is actually incorrect. A 2 stone handicap board is actually just 1.5 stones of advantage due to the lack of komi.
As you ...

Re: This is why I don't like playing against Gobots
This is probably less true for modern monte-carlo bots, but probably applies somewhat to gnugo - especially if it's pushed into a 10 minute game.
Actually, MC bots tends to be fairly crappy teachers unless you are looking to understand the value of tactical fighting and basic group safety. The ...

Re: Japanese v.s. Chinese v.s. AGA scoring here we "Go" agai
GnuGo uses area rules, GnuGo fills in territory, GnuGo captures every single one of its dead stones. If territory scoring was the problem, these beginners shouldn't have had any problems. But they did have problems; they were horribly, horribly confused.

Most of the time, I'd just like to do a string of problems not based on rank at all, or do problems by some more general metric like "hard" or "intermediate"
Click on the Problems menu item, then click the Search tab and select the difficulty interval that you want as well as the problem types ...

What is the status of the black group given the optimal sequence of play?
I am a bit out of shape, but I think the optimal sequence goes like this.

$$ . O O X 4 X . 8 |
$$ . . . O 5 X X 9 |

Re: Spaced Repetition Software for Tsumego
I did some testing there. It works fine with a 19x19 board and only screws up with a 13x13 board. You're right I think, it's most likely a problem with the version of the viewer.
Looks like the bug still exists in eidogo, so I uploaded a new plugin version that bypasses the problem by using full ...

Re: Spaced Repetition Software for Tsumego
Only part of the viewer/problem is shown. I'd only see the left side of that problem (and only the back button) on one of my cards for some reason. It looks like only the left hand third of the "image" is shown. I used the import option from tools so I don't think it's a problem with the code on ...

Re: Spaced Repetition Software for Tsumego
I'm afraid there appears to be a problem with the plugin, only part of the viewer is visible on the card.
It uses the eidogo compact mode and should look something like this . After clicking the Show Answer button you get the different variations marked also.
Or is there some other display ...

Updated my Anki plugin to work with the latest version. It supports sgf via the eidogo javascript viewer. Its name is "Go problem Viewer New" (lost my old account, hence the "New")

Re: negative points in handicap games
So my question is how many negative points do i set for every "stone".
I thought about komi... 6.5 * 9 stones would be about 58.5 points.
Would this be good ?
Komi is worth half a move, so double that and you get a better value.
However, negative komi favors the weaker player as they basically ...

Ah yeah. I meant an even number of odd numbers makes the sum even.

Re: Math problem (easy)
Question:
what is the hand of cards that maximize the probability that you will finish next turn, ie play all your cards at once to match the dice sum ?
The two first cards are 1 and 2. The final card can be either 6 7 or 8. All three give you the same 16/36 chance on winning.

Re: 124. Chew (3k) vs Fuego (Bot)
could you elaborate on this point? I had thought that one of the big advantages of Monte Carlo methods is that they make good use of increased computational power, in a way that older programs didn't.

On the other hand, were Black to respond to White's initial approach move simply at 'a', it would be a better direction for his stones since then White would not have such an easy time of it on the right side; any waruichi (wedge) would be attacked. On the other hand, after Black's extension at 'a ...
