Re: Piracy in the Go industry.

So people will abandon their beliefs when threatened by thugs. Nothing new there, Galileo Galilei did much the same.

Sorry, but pirating John Fairbairn's books does not make you Galileo. In fact, I would say John Fairbairn plays the role of Galileo (producer of useful content), and pirates play ...

Re: Piracy in the Go industry.

I happen to have done some work in the area of copyright enforcement. My experience working with content producers (not RIAA, etc.) has led me to agree mostly with John on this matter. Sure, bad markets and small audiences hurt your ability to recoup your initial investment, but so does piracy. I ...

Re: Starcraft II

Since we have some strong sc2 players here, I thought I might post a replay to get some suggestions. This is a random vs. random match on Blistering Sands. It turned out to be a ZvT, with me (bronze) as zerg, and one of my friends (gold) as terran. I did an early zergling harass, expanded, and then ...

Re: Mornington Crescent

Fwiffo, your early expansion was an interesting dynamic counter to the IG; somehow you still seem to have "sente". I hate to put Hyperpape in zugzwang so early in the game, but the timing is spot on...

Camden Town! (Despite recent tournament results, I still favor more traditional builds.)

Re: Studying in Kyoto vs. Tokyo?

I must say, I am somewhat worried that all the go players will be old men (is this impression wrong?) ... Also since I'll only have had like 2 and a half years of college Japanese by the time I go I'm not sure how able I will be to meet people.

On my trip to Tokyo I played old men at the Nihon ...

Re: Studying in Kyoto vs. Tokyo?

You would have a great time in either city. The trick to studying abroad (or teaching abroad) is to get out and meet people from Japan and other countries. If you spend all your time with Americans--or as Kirby noted, playing video games--you will have a good time, but you will later view your ...

OK, I'll leave if you want. Many a true word is spoken in jest.

Ease up, I was being facetious, and I am not a moderator. ;-)

Re: Starcraft II

I finally started to play ladder games, and *all* of my games against protoss have involved cheese or void rays. The first game was an all-in probe rush (huh?). Others turtled up and then went straight for void rays. I am still fairly new, so the rays are still hard to stop--even when I know exactly ...

If this were http://www.goproblems.com, I would vote +1 well-constructed.

Re: Open Samsung Thread

Best way to see USA/Europe representative in Samsung cup in near future: just boycott all Samsung products. Choose Fujitsu, instead, if possible.
I do this myself: I bought 2 Fujitsu notebooks - for me and my wife. And the quality is much better actually.

I don't have a car yet, but if I buy it ...

Re: Samsung Cup interviews (opening ceremony)

Q: Lee Changho, what do you expect from this tournament?
Lee Changho: I feel that my condition is better than before. In domestic matches I often learn from Lee Sedol, forging refinements to my game from the pounding of his hammer . I hope this year I have a good result.

Wow, a big lol.

Re: Open Samsung Thread

Here are my predictions:

Kong Jie > Lee Changho -- Lee Changho barely escaped in his game vs. Chang Hao.
Park Jiyeon < Kim Jiseok -- Kim Jiseok seems much stronger than Park Jiyeon.
Gu Li > Han Sanghoon -- Gu Li is not in top form, but it is tough to bet against him.
Heo Yeongho > Wang Tao ...

Re: Samsung Cup interviews (opening ceremony)

Perhaps Go gets good publicity in Europe, but in the US I expect that they would rather host a golf or tennis tournament--something that would attract more media attention.

I just meant that I would have expected wins from Gu Li, Chen Yaoye, and perhaps Chang Hao. :) I have set up brackets with some other Go players, but the winner got nothing but bragging rights.

Re: What do you want to see in a Go book?

A modern Invincible would be fantastic. Perhaps a book about the rise and reign of Lee Changho? I have a book like this, but it is in Chinese. Sometimes I think about translating it...

I think Invincible is great because it well-organized, contains many games, many game commentaries, and lots of ...
