Re: Quantum Mechanics
Wait, so this is resurrecting Bohmian mechanics? What about quantum field theory, then?

Re: Amateur vs Professional
Just today (at KGS: "eurogotv3") D. Surin, a 6dKGS, did beat A.Dinerchtein, a 3p. It emphasizes that the best amateurs are on the same level with average pro's. Only the top pro's might be two full stones stronger. I am a 1d at KGS and I think that I could beat Lee Sedol with HC9, e.g. in 10 ...

Re: studying go in china
Interesting blog. Nice photos! About the rank conversion - Chinese ranks are most definitely not 2 weaker than European ones. In fact, I would say that they are at least equal, or perhaps higher. You're right that 6-dan is the highest for Chinese players, and it's extremely strong. 5-dan Chinese is ...

Re: A 1 Dan's Half Understanding of Fundamentals
I think the issue behind this debate is that the subject matter at hand is extremely fuzzy and, as pointed out earlier, ill-defined. It seems too hard to make sweeping generalizations that can accurately characterize the nature of "1-dan level" play. Robert's ideas are more or less right (some are ...

As black, I use Kobayashi quite a bit, and orthodox to some extent. I am long past my san-rei-sei phase, and almost never play it. I use Chinese a decent amount as well, but never mini-chinese.

How are point changes determined?
Clearly, you gain points when you win, and you lose points when you lose. If you beat a stronger player (more RP), you earn more points, and vice versa. But exactly how much?
For example, I just beat someone with ~500 less RP than me. I gained around 50 points. Conversely, I also beat someone with ...

I'm not fully sure, but I think being pro does improve your chances in China.
I didn't believe it, but what do you know: http://www.lifein19x19.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7566
That's amazing.

Hikaru No Go Hokuto Cup?
I've recently been rewatching the HNG anime, and noticed that I couldn't find the actual Hokuto cup videos anywhere. I have seen the preliminaries immediately preceding the cup, but not the tournament itself. It's been a few years since I watched HNG, so my memory may be wrong, and the Hokuto cup ...

Magicwand, I cannot tell you how blatantly false that is.
cyclops, your question is slightly interesting, but its hard for us to provide an answer. I agree, Zhou Yuan is an amateur and a subpar author. His commentary is appropriate for weaker players such as you however.

Re: How does a go server like KGS/Kaya keep running?
Now that I think about it, charging $15 dollars and then throwing in two months of KGS+ was pretty clever by wms. KGS+ doesn't cost him anything, the only drawback is people being turned away by the 14.99 price.

Re: how close is this game?
It's not that hard. There are only three main points: K7, which W must play next, then N12 and B15 area. The rest is just trivial exchanges. It follows that B has an unshakeable lead following a quick analysis.
