Hybrid time control for correspondence games?

Dear all,

I recently started to play correspondence games, since with my job and my family I almost never find the undisturbed time I need to play real-time. And I really think OGS is great...
However, I really like how the time affetcs the play in real-time games, and it sometimes feels odd to ...

L19 / Eidogo on Tablet

Hi all,

I have a question regarding the embedded SGF viewer (I think this is Eidogo). I regularly use a tablet to browse the forum. However, using the SGF viewer is really a pain. The problem is that the "next move" button is so close to the slide control. I happens occasionally that while going ...

Re: People Using 10% of Their Brain - and other complaints

Two things. First, the increase in life expectancy in advanced societies since the mid 19th century is mostly the result of keeping children alive. Only a few years have been added to life expectancy at age 20 since 1800, even though decades have been added to life expectancy at birth.

From the ...

Re: People Using 10% of Their Brain - and other complaints

Where did I say the article attributed most cancers to environment? I merely said that it indicated that some environmental factor (foods) are banned in other countries because they are believed to cause health issues, some of those issues being cancer. It was one piece of the puzzle which ...

Re: People Using 10% of Their Brain - and other complaints

... Most cancers are environmental: the incidence was much lower a hundred years ago. If more money was put into cleaning up the environmental factors and teaching people how to avoid them then there would be far fewer people dying of cancer. I would like to see these organizations devote a ...

Re: People Using 10% of Their Brain - and other complaints

I have seen it work first-hand on several pets over the years. My wife believes it and I think it sounds crazy, but how can you explain that homeopathic concoctions have provided almost instant relieve on multiple occasions and save the live of at least one cat in our family?

Maybe the cat needed ...

Re: People Using 10% of Their Brain - and other complaints

I don't think that anyone has made the evolutionary argument. In short, if we only used 10% of our brains, our brains would have shrunk by natural selection to eliminate the 90% that we do not use. Brains are expensive organs.

I totally agree with that argument. But then: Why did biologists ...

Re: People Using 10% of Their Brain - and other complaints

You cannot prove a single thing with statistics. All you can do is to show probabilities that something is true. Anything short of complete information cannot prove anything, and if you have complete information then you don't have statistics. For some reason people seem to think that if, by ...

Re: People Using 10% of Their Brain - and other complaints

Most of the passive activity in the brain doesn't show up on a brain scan for much the same reason that a scale does not show a weight value despite atmospheric pressure. The baseline is not at true zero. We can certainly measure, with the proper tools, a lot more activity than we can see in the ...

Re: People Using 10% of Their Brain - and other complaints

The real theory is that we use 15% of our neurons at the same time, and we never use 100%

And I always thought that some people sometimes use 100% of their neurons: It is called a seizure.

I don't know (since my system works now...)
If I were you, I would switch of each module individually and try.

KIS has a setting "log non-critical events", probably you can find a hint in the report...
Good luck!

Re: Unable to launch the application

I got it. The KIS "Web Anti Virus" was the culprit. After disabling it CGoban3 would connect again. I have now added "gokgs.com" to the list of trusted sites in "Web Anti Virus" ->"Settings" -> "Trusted URLs" and everything works as it should.

Re: Unable to launch the application

Hi all,

I just experienced the same problem. I have a Win8 convertible (Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13) for a little more than one month. It came with a pre-installed trial of McAffee antivirus and everthing was working well.
I changed now to KIS and I have the same problem. I tried to disable the KIS ...

Re: How often does an insei play his teacher?

This discussion has come up a few times in different forms on L19. What I've gathered is this -- instead of thinking of the teacher as a teacher - it might be better to think of them like a trainer, much like a boxer might have. The teacher might prescribe exercises the student to work and or a ...
