Re: Tsumego Question

I've extended what I mentioned above as potentially the correct line. I also added Ed's suggested possibilities as variations. I'm not a strong player, so if anyone can see a flaw, please speak up.

And if this problem is really in the "Elementary" section, then I need to go back to just playing tic ...

Re: Tsumego Question

I just downloaded 围棋练习大全, a Chinese tesuji, tsumego, and joseki app. On the positive side, there are a lot of problems -- 320 tesuji and 735x3 elementary-/middle-/upper-level life and death problems. On the negative side, I don't think you can see the solution unless you get it (probably better for ...

Re: I try to compose tsumego

Thanks Bill and Kirby!

Kirby, your problem's theme is that after W-Q19, B-M18, White still lives with W-L19! By any chance do you remember in which book the problem appeared?

Re: Small Problem from Takao Shinji's Blog

Black seems to have 4 straightforward inside forcing moves to limit White to one eye. Maybe White can give up some stones to live small, but I don't see how.

B-J8, W-J7, B-H8, W-H7, B-H9, W-H10, B-J9. Next, Black has the obvious forcing move at K11.

Re: Middle game problem from a Sakata book

White has many center moves that quickly lead nowhere. Only one move seems to give White any chance, although I'm sure I'm missing Black's best defense.

Nice problem, tchan. Thanks!

Re: Problem Nr. 344 from Cho's intermediate Problems

Be sure to remember that when a similar position arises in your AGA tournament games this weekend, that Black dies. The American Go Association rules have situational superko, which prohibits Black from repeating the position that Black 7 creates in HermanHiddema's diagram above.

Re: Recent 9x9 game

For an otherwise excellent problem, a minor issue is that under AGA or Chinese rules, Black wins.

From the original position, Black defends. Under AGA rules, White then gives Black a pass stone, whereupon Black has 27 points, White has 26 points before komi. Under Chinese rules, Black's defending ...

I'm the last person to ask about tesuji problems, but Shaddy's solution to the bottom problem seems flawed.

Re: Semeai

Aurik, your refutation is correct! I missed that Black's outside stones would have a shortage of liberties. Ugh.

Anyway, I'll try once more to show what solution theme Bill probably had in mind, and then I'll go hide in a cave.

Re: Semeai

One move seems to make Black miai of living and creating an extra outside liberty for the corner semeai.

Because I'm probably incorrect (such is the life of a weak kyu player), I've only included a couple sequences to show the idea.

In any event, thanks for yet another nice problem, Bill!

Nice problem. Thanks Bill!

I was always off by a point, because I missed the required White prophylactic in the lower right corner. Dagnabbit.
