Re: Age & Improvement
I learned how to program computers when I was 16. My brain was still elastic and spongy enough to absorb new concepts very rapidly. But the single most salient reason why I progressed so quickly and so effortlessly to expert level was that I had a knack for it that led me to become obsessively ...

Re: Broken Yunzi Stones
It sounds like you are more careful about how you put them away in their bowls than you are when you use them in play...
But to answer your question, it could just be the constant pressure placed upon stones at the bottom turns minor stress flaws into actual cracks that then separate.

Re: Review: Shusaku's Very Best Moves
There are forces moving us towards a state of electronic tenancy, where what we have is owned by somebody else. I understand why it is happening, but I regard it as pernicious. As we know, serfdom can last for centuries.
Indeed.

Re: Raising the Standard of Western Go
It's not a matter of turning back the clock. Sure, the internet is here to stay, and everything including go and go players is at everyone's fingertips, but that doesn't mean that people have stopped wanting to meet in person (hence the cybersex joke).
This perspective seems to mostly apply to ...

+1
I really like the 10mm plastic ING stones too. Perfect for club play. And their slightly flattened surfaces are a touch of genius. If I played more, I'd probably get a second set just to have as a backup.

Re: Recommended goban for college student.
A thin board (anything less than about 2 inches thickness) will very likely warp over time in non-climate controlled conditions. And thicker boards will likely separate along their seams if they are multi-piece construction (I have a board that has separated in this way). Thus, your best bet IMO for ...

Re: Raising the Standard of Western Go
Would Hikaru get so good so fast if he had a weak pro in his head rather than Sai?
That's a very good question. I think there was more to Hikaru's rapid improvement than just Sai's strength . I think the nature of their relationship (best friends, for all intents and purposes) and the fact that ...

Re: Raising the Standard of Western Go
Are we talking about how to train adults or children? The future of Go does not rest on the shoulders of adults, but of kids. Most kids can't sit still long enough to benefit from a "supportive environment" aimed at cultivating enlightening discussion between highly motivated students with a lot of ...

Re: Raising the Standard of Western Go
Regarding theory (and books on theory):
In my experience, most humans are not good at remembering abstract theory without context to give it meaning and practical usefulness. Go theory is most effectively absorbed when there are burning questions, born from the crucible of actual play, anxiously ...

[..]the general readership of this forum should understand that it was an extraordinary courtesy that is atypical for film production. I wouldn't go around expecting all such future projects to yield similarly.
And the biggest reason is because it is impractical to do so. [..]

Re: Opponent mirrors your moves
Yeah, I remember that, too. Though in this case, there's a huge difference in skill between both players (the weaker player had to keep mirroring to the end to win. A stronger player would have broken the mirror and then kept playing after the tsuke).
And it seems to be a game without komi.

And as a result, greater transparency has been achieved through this thread...
It speaks well to Cole and his crew that they have shown greater openness as a result of this thread.
I wouldn't get too excited about this small victory in the name of transparency. Yes, Cole was shamed, in a sense ...

Re: Opponent mirrors your moves
The technique for breaking mirror Go against black who plays on the Tengen was admirably demonstrated in episode 8 of Hikaru no Go . Okumura, a junior high school member of the Kaio Go club, thought he could humiliate Akira Toya by playing mirror Go against him, and quickly learned the futility of ...

Re: Surrounding Game asking for more money?
It is an inevitable fact of film production that everyone who pitches in somehow, whether it be with money or labor (but especially money) feels entitled to creative or operational input. Everyone thinks they are a producer, despite knowing absolutely nothing about production. This thread is a good ...

Re: Surrounding Game asking for more money?
The general public has no clue how expensive and unpredictable film production is. If they knew how movies/documentaries were produced, they would stand in sheer shock at the absurdity of it. I have a good friend who is in the middle of post-production on a documentary about the Rubik design studio ...
