The proposal was not for "could we have an agreement by which we do not look at each others time?" It was "could we have an option whereby I could hide my time from my opponent?". Those are not the same thing.
If you go by my first post, I suggest that you read the rest of this thread. I ...

Re: Hiding your clock from your opponent
how could any programming changes prevent him form having a go clock sitting next to him I can't stop someone from using a 5 dan bot either. But in my experience most people don't cheat, so I'm not worried about that at all. If you can tally my time in your head, then more power to you. But if you ...

Re: Hiding your clock from your opponent
However, the reason you claim to desire this option is so that your opponent is less likely to beat you with time-based tactics.

Re: Hiding your clock from your opponent
I see it as a game option that will need to be accepted by both players before the game begins and will affect both players equally during the game. If the players agree to use this option, they will be shown their own clocks only.

Re: Hiding your clock from your opponent
Let's say a go server implements your idea of hiding the clock from your opponent and you are playing against someone you don't know. If you both choose to hide your clocks and if your opponent disconnects and comes back days later, are you sure you both would remember how much time is left on each ...

Re: Hiding your clock from your opponent
My understanding was that his reason for such option is that the game would feel more like a "club game". I don't understand that.

You phrase your recap in the form of questions which you seem to address to me. Did you expect me to answer them? I'm afraid I don't understand what you are talking about.
The only thing I'm after is to have a discussion and to hear people's opinion.

[I seriously think you are trying to solve a problem that does not exist.
If you feel better about the game when you don't see his clock, don't look or - as somebody mentioned - put a sticky over it, or something. Do not worry how he feels, its none of your business, to be honest. Maybe he does ...

Re: Hiding your clock from your opponent
I might otherwise argue the point further, but I think that you now have enough information here to find the kind of games you want without waiting for a server to implement this feature. I know it isn't accomplished by hiding the clock, but if you can get games where remaining time cannot be "used ...

Re: Hiding your clock from your opponent
It just strikes me as very strange to institute a rule that says "yes, you have all the information available to you to determine the opponents time, but you are forbidden to do so." Especially into a game that previously had no rules that involved determing the player's intent or internal ...

Re: Hiding your clock from your opponent
This is simple arithmetic you can do in your head. Or just estimate (he's probably taken about a minute longer than I have). It doesn't require somebody to have a ing timer on their desk that they press every move, just a clock already being displayed on their monitor.

Re: Hiding your clock from your opponent
I understand some people believe time is an important part of the game and should not be hidden. Obviously, the option to hide the clocks is for the other people, those who believe time should not get in the way of friendly casual games. So, this argument doesn't hold water either.
If you want ...

Re: Hiding your clock from your opponent
On the other hand, since my opponent can see my clock, he might want to launch some complications just as I get short on time. Pros often use such tactics. Moreover, as Mef points out, it isn't that difficult to figure out how much main time your opponent has left.

Re: people who use Canadian timing
Just to forestall any further confusion. I want to get games from KGS, that's why I post in this forum. As for IGS, I don't see how I could download other people's games. Even if there was a way, automating download would be difficult. Not to mention, IGS rounds up the time to the nearest second.

people who use Canadian timing
If you know any people around 2k (+/- a few ranks) who play a lot of games with Canadian timing, preferably 10 min/25 moves Canadian or similar with short or absent main time, please let me know their names. I'd like to do some statistics on the time per move.
