Re: Is the Computer Go Mailing List Available Anywhere?

Answering my own questin: here is an archive that goes back to 2007: https://groups.google.com/g/computer-go-archive.

Also, I have a question about how practicioners thought about progress prior to AlphaGo. Was anyone here involved in implementing computer go programs prior to AlphaGo, or ...

Is the Computer Go Mailing List Available Anywhere?

Googling gets me to https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Computer_Go/Mailing_Lists, which directs me to http://computer-go.org/pipermail/computer-go/, which returns a 404 error.

I did subscribe at one point, so I may have the contents I'm interested in saved, but I think I'd prefer to have a web based ...

Re: Books for Sale

There’s been no change in availability, but I’m an ocean away from the books. I think I’ll probably visit them sometime in 2024, but that’s not quite scheduled. I’ll try to remember that this thread exists when I’ve made plans, in case anyone is interested.

Re: Are we studying the wrong things?

Not directly in response to John's question, but I made my own little proverb some time back to the effect that you should be worried when your opponent plays a move you dismissed as a mistake.

The rationale is that when that happens, one of you has missed something significant, and it's just as ...

Re: Game fees for big 7?

Do the annual list of top-10 players’ winnings include the game fees? I imagine they’re not a huge proportion of the total, but by the time you reach #10, they must matter a bit.

They are, but in storage, and it will likely be significantly later this year before I’m colocated with them again.

Re: Coronation

I would be interested to hear how thou and thee have survived in USA, Canada, Australia etc. I think purely as a signifier of archaic things, in the US. I say that as someone who’s enjoyed reading the King James.

I’d venture to guess most people in the US encounter the ten commands phrased as ...

Re: New Website

I can find a mixture of things, some worth praising, some that I don't think are as good.

- the news page makes the photos smaller than they used to be, which I think is less visually appealing
- the ratings page does some good work to make ratings more like the database that used to be separate ...

Re: Kellin Pelrine Beats AI

Have there been any attempts to exploit other strong AI using these techniques? Curious whether this is particular to KataGo or if it's a common problem of self-play based training.

Beyond that, is there any background on how these vulnerabilities were discovered? I remember the earlier ...

Updated, while organizing books, I found that I had Invincible: The Games of Shusaku--it was just on a different shelf.

Re: Mister Three Ears turns 70

I can normally go some time without reading about or thinking of the cultural revolution, but just recently, I learned about its effect on Yitang Zhang (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yitang_Zhang). He is notable, because as an essentially unknown 58 year old professor, he proved a major result about ...

Re: Elementary Go Series Question

The first few chapters of attack and defense are good at your level. They discuss the purpose of attacking, and teach a mindset you might not yet have. Otherwise, I agree with everyone else’s comments.
