Re: CGoban 3 Java App Doesn't Work with Win 8.1
Fair enough. You're obviously more knowledgeable than me about how to solve these problems. I'll therefore step away from helping in this instance and you can do so instead.

Re: CGoban 3 Java App Doesn't Work with Win 8.1
The point is to see whether the firewall is causing the problem. If the connection works after the firewall is turned off, then the individual rules can be changed as necessary to enable the connection to take place.

Re: CGoban 3 Java App Doesn't Work with Win 8.1
There could be a few problems:
1. Your network or personal firewall is blocking you. If you're using a laptop, try to log in from another location. If it's successful, then the problem could be a firewall at this location. If unsuccessful, try turning off any firewalls within your computer, then ...

Re: unprofessional behavior from KGS admins during/after jub
Yes, you're right. I couldn't think of a suitable example which features volunteers and a free service. The best that I could think of was a soup kitchen (where the food is free and the people are volunteers), but that's not appropriate either.

Re: unprofessional behavior from KGS admins during/after jub
I have also disliked quite some of the examples of admin behaviour that have been posted in this forum, some were really childish … i.e. they acted like a child would that feels hurt: bash all around w/o caring whether you hit a culprit or an innocent person, and not caring about whether the ...

Re: Is KGS developement dead or just slow?
This is my point. Bill has stated repeatedly that he's going to retain ownership of the code and he doesn't want to bring in any other developers (i.e., he likes doing the development, not project managing others). Simply bringing up open source yet again isn't going to solve anything.

Re: Is KGS developement dead or just slow?
There are several voices asking for new features (e.g., iPad versions, talking clocks, one-colour go, video streaming). Each of these is nice in its own right. Each of them also requires an investment of time to build, test and maintain. Let's look at the practicalities.

Re: Is KGS developement dead or just slow?
I enjoy these discussions about the state of KGS development quite a bit. They usually follow a pattern.
1. Someone says that a missing bug fix or feature means that KGS is dead or dying (e.g., sound bug, one-colour go, speaking count-down byo-omi clocks).
2. People who have never written or ...

Re: Who banned me? For how long?
You can do this today by creating a private room. Admins don't monitor private rooms.
It isn't really an anarchy room if people have to ask permission to enter...
I'd actually argue the opposite. You won't ask permission of the room owner to enter. You'll DEMAND to be let in. The fellow ...

Will you make it permanent?
Check with me when we're both on-line next time and I'll see what I can do.

Re: Who banned me? For how long?
KGS policy is not to identify the length of the ban period, so this information is not provided.
I would have to agree with others that the main purpose of a ban is to improve a situation for KGS and it's users. The banned person is also one of the users, and in most cases, one who we expect ...

Re: Who banned me? For how long?
But seriously - I don't really care where or for what or how KGS admins ban at the moment.
What I am arguing for here is that when a ban does happen, at least these two things should be made clear to the offender:
⋅ what exactly is he punished for (I think this already does happen ...

Re: Problem with admins (yes this thread again)
Now, if a KGS admin was simply curious and wanted to know someone's IP just because , is that totally okay/totally not okay/a little weird?
It's an interesting question. I'm glad that you asked it.
As a bit of preliminary background, KGS takes the privacy of its players very seriously. I would ...

Re: Problem with admins (yes this thread again)
No, I don't think that listening to users means making all the changes that they want. But given the amount of change that's happened in, say, the last decade... I think there's evidence that not much listening happens.
