I found a nice video commentary by Michael Redmond, on the first of the ten-game series: https://badukmovies.com/episodes/student-of-go-seigen

Re: Is Leela good enough to use as a "review partner"?

Try it out and decide for yourself if you like it as a review partner or not.

I like it very much: it gives me lots of new ideas to play, and it corrects my mistakes.

The only caveat: when it comes to life-and-death, you need to let it run longer since on quick analysis it may miss the status of ...

Re: AlphaGo Zero: Learning from scratch

IMO it is impossible to learn Go from scratch, i.e. just the board and stones. The program could learn the playing rules, but because there are countable infinitely ways to score and to determine an outcome of a game, it would get lost.

What do you mean - AlphaGo Zero did just that, it learned Go ...

Re: AlphaGo Zero: Learning from scratch

Fun to watch the progression among the self-play games.

So the "20 block" self-play games are from various stages of training, while the "40 block" folder come only from the strongest version?
That is confusing, I wish that they labeled the "in-training" games somehow, to be able to tell the ...

About 10 moves later (after move 104) the roles reversed: Takao is relaxed, and Iyama is talking to himself a lot, clearly unhappy with the result so far.

Re: One-space pincer in 'Gateway to all Marvels'

Thank you very much for posting all these, very interesting sequences!!

Indeed, very different from the Japanese style - but also very different from the pro style I would say.
Many of these "old joseki" turn quickly into life-and-death problems, if one is not careful.

Because of the forced star ...

Re: Kamakura

There are actually quite a few game records in Gateway to all Marvels . Here are the first two (Guo Fan vs. Li Baixiang) in my 2005 Chinese edition, both featuring the pincer and tobi.

Both differs from the version in Gogod by having a white stone on the tengen and the second one also by having a ...

Re: Kamakura

I was amazed when reading about game 2, to learn that the nowadays very common pincer with 1 in the diagram, was considered an unusual (sub-optimal) move in 1940!
Also, black's reply with 2 was unusual in those times.

There is a reference in Kamakura to the classical Chinese book "The Gateway To ...

Re: Kamakura

I finished reading about game 1. I felt bad that they had to finish it late at night, instead of going into the 4th day fresh - after spending so much time to play the opening and middle game, it feels a bit of a gamble to leave the deciding part of the game happen when the players were obviously ...

Re: Kamakura

What was the purpose of "sealed in a can" environment for the players during such multiple-day matches?
Initially I was thinking this is so that they don't read the published commentaries in the newspaper and be influenced by it for the rest of the game, however that cannot be the reason, since they ...

Kamakura

I started reading John Fairbairn's Kamakura book, about a 10 games match between Go Seigen and Kitani Minoru, without komi and with changing handicap as it was the fashion in those days.

I am enjoying it a lot, so thanks John for this book!

I have a question: the book is describing a lot of verbal ...

Re: Personal Waltheri?

You can use either Drago or Kombilo for this purpose: you add your local SGF collection, it gets indexed, then you can search a given pattern and you get results like in waltheri.
Later, you can update the collection by adding new games.
