Re: Time warp

Yes.
Before I stopped playing I never would be able to break the 5k barrier. Within two months after resuming the game in March I was not only back to 5k but 3k.

My time off was about 3 years (completely devoting myself to something else) and I had to relearn practically everything (starting at 15k ...

Re: Pocket-sized tsumego books

You may want to look at the tesuji book Rescue and Capture by Yilun Yang .

I am currently carrying this around anywhere I go, because it's a perfect fit to my jacket pocket. It's awesome to be able to flip it out anywhere, anytime and read 5 minutes or so. The size can be compared to a postcard ...

And so is every other joseki database and even books.
I guess it's best to consult more than one source.

Re: scoring

Handicap stones give the weaker player an advantage during the game. They do not affect the final scoring.

Re: Which do you prefer?

I always feel like I'm being rushed during club games, or that I'm holding everything up. No one has ever complained, but everyone seems to play faster than me.

Oh yes, I didn't play club games for quite some time so I forgot about this. But it bothers me as well. I can't really concentrate when ...

Re: Which do you prefer?

If it's just playing I prefer going to a club, not only because the board is made of wood, but also because of the chat, the food/beverages and the strangers' interested looks.

However, I don't expect to learn from these games. There is too much distraction at the club. If I want to study I prefer ...

Re: severe time weakness?

I have the same 'problem'. I study more than I play and consequently I spend a lot of time thinking (about things I recently studied etc.) during games. I enjoyed 30+5*30, because it's slow, but it was bothersome to get into byo-yomi pressure early, because my opponent started taking their time then ...

To become a master of Go is not easy, but became an amateur 5D or 6D it's not hard

I am not sure what to think about this article. Of course I as a mere kyu may be in no position to judge it. But I can't get any more out of it than: Do Tsumego from the moment you wake up until you go to bed and ...

Re: Poll: Where do you find tsumego to solve?

Also it gives a lot pressure (under time trial) when people gives lines of descriptions of what you are supposed to do with the question. I often feel frustrated on solving only 2 problems when the 5 smily faces disappear.

Just don't use time trial then. By using the problem search you can find a ...

Re: Joseki dictionary

I use http://www.josekipedia.com an open source Joseki database.

Other than that I am waiting for the release of the "new Ishida" by Takao Shinji to make my first real Joseki dictionary purchase.

Re: 1 dan 2010 Group Discussion!

I'd try a better Tesuji book. "Tesuji" is good, out of question, but at 3 Kyu you usually don't get any new informations out of it and the problems, except the ones in the last chapter, are not challenging and more importantly far too few.
"Get Strong at Tesuji", which has 534 quite easy problems ...

Re: Improvement from Turn based games

I prefer real-time or at least 'blitz' turn based games which will not take longer than a week. I completely agree with the reasons DrStraw gave in his posting.

Since I started playing again in March this year I improved about 4 stones by playing and finishing more than 200 games and studying ...

Re: New to WBaduk

I just played my first two games there and I have to say the style there really struck me. I already knew that wbaduk player do not care about joseki and patterns but the players there really seem to be into pushing and crawling thus creating a whole board semeai.

After playing one game on the ...

Re: 1 dan 2010 Group Discussion!

My god, I thought the ambitious goal of 1d in 2010 was just the right thing for me as kgs 3k. Now I spent two weeks of studying and I'm almost back to 4k.

I was often told that my main flaws were to be found in the middle game, so I read through Attack and Kill and am currently readig James Davies ...

Re: Ing Goe Classes ending

Unfortunately I can't attend these classes anyway, because I don't have time to hang around online on Sunday afternoons. But when I started playing I watched them regularly and I think that without them I would still be DDK. It's a real shame that lecture series is discontinued.
