Note added to the SL Solution page. The confusion seems to be caused by a difference in problem conventions, old and new.

The proverb must be a direct translation of the Japanese saying nisen ha haisen 二線は敗線. Takagawa Kaku used the phrase in many books of his. Nihon Kiin's Proverbs Small Dictionary (1994) lists it in a slightly different form 二線は必敗線.
