Re: Hikaru no Go - Download To Own

It's the dub, which is unfortunate, because I really don't like the dub.

Re: Won, but I lost some battles I thought I should win (DDK

How do I play after the double hane on S14? I really wanted to play it, but I was worried about being cut at R14, and I didn't see any valuable options after that.

Re: Is it possible to play Go without strategy?

I've read this whole thread and I have no idea what's actually being discussed.

It's not possible to play any game without a strategy because your strategy is your goal in the game. Even if you just make random moves, that's a "spray and pray" strategy.

Re: North Americian Go Convention

I wish there was an option to attend the lectures but not play in the tournaments. I'm thinking of going, but I'm much more interested in the lectures than playing.

Thanks for the pointers. Why is it bad to nobi on move 46?

Won the game, but I know I could have done better

I played white in this game. I feel like I had many opportunities to invade, but I couldn't find them or didn't feel comfortable with them.

Saw takodori post these on Twitter. Totally awesome, though it would make more sense for sente's stones to become black... maybe use othello pieces for the go side?

Re: Vacation surprise

But chess and shogi are both 9x9 intersections (8x8 squares)

Shogi is 9x9 squares, not 8x8.

Re: Working Memory and Go

There was an article some time ago about how shogi professionals actually use their brain in different (and more efficient) ways than playing. I would assume this is true also of go pros. I don't really know if this is actually an increase of memory, though.

Re: Chinese, Korean, and Japanese player name issues.

In fact, there are completely different games called xiangqi and shogi in china and Japan, respectively. Shogi, xiangqi, and shatranj are all descendants of the same Indian parcheesi variant.
Chaturanga isn't a parcheesi variant. You may be thinking of chaturaji , which, despite the name given in ...

A beginner game... any critique at all would be welcome.

I'm totally horrible at this game (I'm a lot better at shogi), although after reading a chapter of the book "How Not to Play Go," I decided to try my hand at this game again. It went unexpectedly well, although I know I should have done much worse because of the mistakes I made.

Re: Why leave out the I after H in alphabet on gobans?

We're thinking the same thing with different ways of remembering it. Yes, the first number goes left, and second number goes right. But I believe the way shogi's coordinates are set up is to make it natural for readers of vertical Japanese script.
