about the strength of gnugo

Post by zookar »

Before I only tried gnugo-3.8 level 10,and win 100+ each game, but recently I had a game with gnugo-3.8 level 20,it suprised me that I only win around 20 or 30.When set the level to 25 or higher,It took the computer tens of minutes even hours to take a move. When set the level above 100,gogui.exe juse shut down.So could anyone try out how far the strength of gnugo goes?

The difference between winning by 30 points and winning by 100 points doesn't really matter, in my opinion. Clearly GnuGo isn't challenging you either way.

I think his/her point is that he's wondering how Gnugo's strength actually scales, if you have the computing power to run it at its max settings.

But, The difference between being killed everywhere, and living enough to "Only" lose by 30-20 points is very large.

Anyone knows how to assign more RAM for gnugo windows binary?
I'm testing gnugo3.8 level 25 (black) against silverstar 10 (white),after around 70 moves,it takes around hours for gnugo to make a move,I think more assigned RAM may speed it up.
Below is the game till now,gnugo3.8 level 25 black and silverstar 10 white

I'm using Drago with Gnugo 3.8, Fuego 4.1, and Aya as game engines and none allow setting the engine strength (the option is grayed out on all three). Is this a quirk of Drago or is my laptop - 4 years old now - just too feeble to enable this feature? Or is there some arcane setting I've simply missed to enable this feature?

I'm using gogui in windows, the commandline is as follow:
"F:\Program Files\GoGui\Engine\gnugo\gnugo" --mode gtp --level 25
But in this game,I'm using ascii interface by open gnugo.exe directly, which seems to be faster than via gogui. It is also because gogui-twogtp.exe doesn't work here since silver star 10 is not supported.
In ascii interface,just type:
level 25
and level would be set to 25,instead of 10 as default. But level 25 is extremely slow, below level 20 is suggested.
For other command ascii interface provides, type help.
