I find myself being unable to play without stone sounds, and don't even enjoy watching games when there's no sound. That's probably rather pathetic on my end! :) I hope that wms can fix this on KGS's side. Running an old version of Java isn't a viable option for me.

wms stated earlier in this thread that he won't be fixing the stone sounds issue. There are workarounds in this thread you can try.

I guess then it's waiting for a Java update or kaya.gs to open its gates, whichever comes first. :)

I have such a feeling about what will come first ;)

As a paying customer, that's a bit grim to hear.

Exactly. I was considering possible kgs+ when I get back to the studyings, but definitely not going to if I don't have sound.

If this keeps you away from KGS or KGS+, I won't argue with you. It seems so minor, but it really drives me nuts. :( The biguglyhack worked for me, but I completely understand people not wanting to deal with it.

For those considering KGS+, note that the issue is only with stone clicks--lectures are still fine.

I give up. I'll fix the *!@*$!@#*$ stone sounds.

But I'm going on vacation on Friday (to Congress then to a family event); I don't want to fix before then, because if there is a problem with my fix I won't be able to change anything until I return. So I'll try to get a fix in sometime after August 20...it's a long way off, but that's when I'll be back around.

It's curious that L19 filters "non-working". They are such prudes!

(Thanks!)

Thanks, dude. I'm on your side, really, and I defer to you on the best way to manage your server and software. If you tried to respond to half of the requests (even demands) I've seen, you'd lose years off your life. I think most of us realize it is a "side" project that often demands more of your time than you'd like (you know, for a real job, family, and such). We do really appreciate it, and thanks for responding to something that is broken for many of us.

GNU/Linux with Java 1.7.0_05

big ugly hack worked (viewtopic.php?p=98243#p98243)

copied the downloaded jar file to:
/usr/lib/java/jre1.7.0_05/lib/ext

the other solution did NOT work (the one with the command line switch: javaws -J-Dsun.sound.useNewAudioEngine="false").

thanks to all those who helped (they know who they are :))

I also had the problem since the last cgoban update and simply added the solution of UnclMartin to the CGoban 3 shortcut.

UnclMartin wrote:Here is a solution that comes to us via email that should work for the Java Web Start client (but not the applet):

Edit the shortcut or command that starts CGoban and add
-J-Dsun.sound.useNewAudioEngine="false"
after javaws.

For example, if your command was javaws cgoban.jnlp change it to javaws -J-Dsun.sound.useNewAudioEngine="false" cgoban.jnlp

Now this works on XP for me:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaws.exe -J-Dsun.sound.useNewAudioEngine="false" -localfile "C:\WINDOWS\Temp\6.0\54\21086f76-1c42d568"

Thanks wms.

On a side note, biguglyhack worked. It wasn't as complicated as I feared it would be, once I got into it. Sadly, the reverse seems to apply to go.

:grumpy: My KGS go stone clicking sound was mysteriously missing after I installed jre 7 as other posts above indicated.

:study: I have tried to find a solution for this problem for a few weeks.

 At last I found your remedy works very fine for me fantastically.
