For the main topic of the thread....it seems to have been amicably resolved by post #5, and a couple other interesting on-topic posts sprinkled throughout (it would be nice if the beta expanded a bit).

I would disagree here. Once you know the basic rules, and the concept of life and death (essentially what you get at
http://www.playgo.to/iwtg/en/ ), go can be very much like swimming or riding a bike....you can try to have all the instruction in the world, but you can't learn to swim from the dock! Get out there and play...Swallow your pride, play some games, get crushed, and get a feel for how the game works, just like the proverb says ("lose your first 50 games as fast as you can, then you can start learning").
