Arrived at college, KGS stopped working

Post by konfuzed »

The problem: KGS runs and I log in, but some rooms are missing and if I try to actually do anything, such as view information on another player, change settings, or create a game, nothing happens.

It is confusing to me because it broke in precisely the same way regardless of what operating system I use or which user I'm logged in as. There are definitely people who play on KGS here though, so I am curious what the problem could be. I have tried deleting temporary java files on linux because I read that might help, but it did not seem to make a difference. My university does use the type of service where you have to log in before getting online, but you only need to log in twice per year. Is that the issue? Should I try to delete temporary java files again?

My first guess, if you can take your computer elsewhere and it works, is that your college is blocking certain ports that KGS uses on their network. You might have better luck with a different client/system or asking their helpdesk to look in to it.

I thought KGS only used one port...

My problems at college were because they usually only allowed port 80 traffic, so KGS never even connected. However, since you can connect, the problem must be something else. I'd try using the same computer in another network, and ultimately talking to the IT helpdesk.

I don't remember exactly, but I think IGS worked at my school. They probably didn't block the telnet port. You might want to try that.

But yeah, Kaya (and the new HTML KGS, when it comes out) will make that much easier.

I suggest those who cannot connect while at college contact the college's support desk.

It may make a difference if you are trying to connect using student owned computer or school owned computer. Many schools have policies prohibiting the use of school-owned or public-owned computers for playing games.

The school's support desk will be best for finding out under what circumstances students are allowed to connect to KGS and the support desk can help provide information on accessing KGS.
