Re: GoGameGuru BadukTv Competition
Good god, $50 / month. I understand their costs, but I didn't think it would be that much. I might have been able to spring for $35, but I'm not so sure with $50. I hope it works out for them though.
I tried watching the sample video. I'm not sure where the video is hosted, but it seems to be really slow. I get sound, but the video is basically frozen on the first frame, and I can't use the seek control to skip. I don't think it's my connection as youtube and other streaming video services work fine.

Re: GoGameGuru BadukTv Competition
It would be kind of cool if they had a lower tier where for example, you pay $20 a month, but only have acces to a rolling set of videos that change each month, or maybe bi weekly. maybe even weekly. And still keep the $50 as the on deamand teir.

Re: GoGameGuru BadukTv Competition
but for $7 you can watch it live without the subtitles. I'll probably try the translated version for a month or two.
I'm hardly saying anything original but at a lower price they might get more people signing up for it and end up making more money in the long run. For $30 I'd be tempted to keep my subscription running but at $50 I'll be having to think if its worth it every month - I'm not rich (i.e. if I'm finding the time to watch most of the videos - the content is surely worth it).
BadukTv say watch their channel for a month and gain a stone
but I do wonder how efficient it will be if it takes up time that could be spent playing games or doing problems.

Re: GoGameGuru BadukTv Competition
I think they're approaching this the wrong way.
Let me see if I understood it right... I can see the $50/month price tag being fair if they translate the whole thing, which is 24 hours a day, or at least a reasonable amount. However, who outside of asia is really involved enough to consume so much content?
I think they'd be much better off if they aimed to translate a much smaller volume of videos (one a day?) and charged a proportionally reduced amount. I'm not doubting what they are aiming to charge is fair for the offered service, but I think their audidience is going to be very small that way.
I for one won't be paying anywhere near that. My personal max would be at $10 and that's a stretch, but then again I wouldn't watch more than one video a day tops, so there's that.

Re: GoGameGuru BadukTv Competition
It might help if there was a detailed program of what all the shows are for the upcoming month.
If its just pro game commentary, how does it differ from Guo Juan's paid lectures for $100/year?

Re: GoGameGuru BadukTv Competition
I think they have a list of whats on BadukTv in a month, but I dont know about a list of what they will translate. I have been paying $7 just through BadukTv to subscribe, and while I dont know anything about whats going on, I feel $7 is fair. Some of the games are pretty cool, and the ads sometimes are just insane.

Re: GoGameGuru BadukTv Competition
I'd pay the 50$ gladly, but they wont let me. I tried to get the 1$ trial week offer and get up to the paypal-site, but Paypal upon completion then declares Go Game Guru is not processing. Did anyone experience something similar?

Re: GoGameGuru BadukTv Competition
I contacted GoGameGuru and David was quick to reply. There seems to be a problem with paying via Paypal from Germany, they have contacted the Paypal Support and hope to have the issue solved soon.

Re: GoGameGuru BadukTv Competition
I personally am not interested in a monthly subscription.
While I was indeed impressed by the sample, and I appreciate how much work goes into producing an English subtitled video, being able to watch it regularly is too low on my priority list. It looks fun and educational, but it's definitely not something I need or want every day. Go tends to be a rather inexpensive hobby, and $50/month can go a long way.
I hope that David has done some market research to prove otherwise, but I'm afraid that the price point might sentence this ambitious and worthwhile project to an early demise. While the comparison to Guo Juan's lectures is askew (Guo Juan offers audio teaching lectures, not televised commentary of pro games), I would nonetheless encourage Gogameguru to consider offering restricted access at a lower price.

Although the format is obviously different, Guo Juan's lecture library consists of hundreds (well, maybe not hundreds, but looking at the list, at least 100) of pro game reviews, which is why I think the comparison is somewhat valid. Each month 1 or 2 new ones are released on modern games. The main difference, the way I see it, is that BadukTV offers more pro game commentaries. Guo Juan releases 2-3 new ones per month, and it seems like Baduk TV has about 12-15. I will try to watch the sample Baduk TV commentary later (the stream wasn't working earlier for me) to see if the format (televised vs pre-recorded) makes a difference.

Re: GoGameGuru BadukTv Competition
It's a bit hard to find but what you get for your money is described here:
http://gogameguru.com/get-baduk-tv/
i.e. 15 translations a month. Also, payment for it is now working, which I've just done (no delays, all automated). It's good that it would be easy to cancel my subscription anytime I want (done online through your Baduk-Tv-English account).
I watched the trial video last night before bed. For me it's better than pro game commentaries (and an interesting ending to that one), and there were no delays on my connection (I've got a pretty fast connection). I have a hard time spending an hour reviewing a pro game but it was easy to spend nearly that watching this video (there's a difference between watching tv and finding the moves on the board myself though of course). I thought there was a good rythmn to the video - e.g. where there was a sequence that they played, which I started to wonder the reasoning for the the commentators would step in an explain it. Having watched untranslated Baduk-TV (whilst it was free through their app) I do appreciate the extra learning efficiency from having a translation.
Final thought, if this proves uneconomical no-one will rush to try it again anyime soon so I don't won't to miss out on this opportunity now. I won't miss the subscription fee this time next year either. If it's a wild success (which obviously we should all hope for) they'll be able to drop the rate.

I saw this as well, but what I could not find was whether all 15 translations are televised games with pro commentary, or if there are other types of programs as well. Targeted lectures, etc.
