Is there a list naming the best games of Go ever played?

Post by Alberich »

I'm curious to know if there's a list naming some of the best games of Go ever played using the 19x19 size goban. I have the iPad and I downloaded some apps that come with games played...but so far I haven't seen a "best of" listing of Go games played. Any ideas on this?

The idea seems... difficult. Best in what sense? Best play by both sides that resulted in a half point win without either side ever seeming to have a lead? That would be too hard to study anyway if you were not a pro. Most one-sided win in a top title? That would depend on some mistake by the opponent. Most surprising tesuji? Why would that be a "best" game, except for the fact that you liked that particular play? And so on... :blackeye:

Everyone has their own favorite games. But that depends on our level, our style, our interests, etc. "Great" games by players we like (for whatever reason) are always "better" than great games by players we do not care about. It's just human nature. Also there are all those "best" games played in qualifying tournaments that never get published. Sigh...

I think there are several wonderful English books you can check out. They are about famous games and include the records and commentary too :) Even if you don't purchase them, perhaps you can grab the games they include.

How about measuring greatness of a game by its proximity to a nuclear detonation? (=

Of course other than that, I think I would propose the following -- The greatest games are the games you take the most delight in playing back through the game record. Of course this means no one else could ever tell you definitively what your set of greatest games would be...but it seems like it would pretty fun trying to figure it on your own.
