fighting game on tygem, wierd answer to aproach

Post by otenki »

Hey guys,

I played a very agressive game against a 11k tygem. (I'm white)

I have a very basic question, I'm even a bit embarased to ask it because I guess I should already know this :-)
I have a problem with move 7.
I think in the end the result is pretty bad even though I killed the group.
What should I do in case the opponent decides to block the corner with this keima ?
And also is this a bad move by black or is it playable ?

Thanks,
Otenki

I could attempt to explain the 4-4 point low approach knight's move block but I think this video I recently watched would be much more helpful.

It's very playable, in this case. Black might have a problem if white can invade or approach from the other side in sente, but here, it puts pressure on white to live on a side black has influence already, from the other side.

7: At first glance, it does not look like a very good move by black. You invaded a loose framework, and he played passively. A pincer looks better, working with the lower left shimari.

8-11: Seems like aji keshi for you. It forces him to take corner territory.
You don't really have to answer 7. Your stone is light, and the board is big.

14-29: Nice kill

30: Why let him wall you in? Play G3. You either kill G2 or you connect at H3. Then his J3/J4 stones look worthless.

37: Joseki here is C11 by him. If he doesn't take it...

38:...you should. ( Actually C12 may be even better for you - not sure... )

48/50: It's tewari analysis time. Look at the board at move 50.
What does C11 do for you? Ans: absolutely nothing. You would much prefer to play it someplace else like E10 or Q14 or...
So play C10 at move 48. He has to patch. Then you have the same situation at move 50, except you have not played at C11 and you can play that stone someplace else.

56: This seems a bit loose.

That knight's move or "footsweep" is a joseki move, but not good in that game position. It is good if black already has a stone around q/r10 on the right side (which he doesn't) and a presence in the lower left (which he does, but it would be better with a closer stone say at f3). The reason black wants a stone on the right side is to pre-pincer a white double approach. The downside of the footsweep is that white can play at r6. With r10 already in place r6 is cramped and can't make a full extension, leading to fighting which is interesting for black. On this board r6 has plenty of space to extend on the right side so p2 is not appropriate.

P.S. Pushing into the knight's move with p3 is bad style as it solidifies black's corner.

Thanks for the all your replies, greatly appreciated.
I've seen the video on the possible answers and when to play what.
It's a bit complicated for me at some points but i'll try to remember the main ideas.

Also thanks Joaz for general ideas on my game. I'll try to digest them and play better next time.

Cheers,
Otenki
