I guess the simple response is probably fine. That way I won't be leaving weaknesses behind or helping him fix his. I'll see where he plays from here.

I'm pretty certain that the exchange on the bottom was good for me (as long as I'm willing to sacrifice that stone), but there don't seem to be any follow ups that are worthwhile right now, so I think it's time to consider what I'm going to do about reducing black's top.

A deep invasion at a seems impossible right now, because the weakness of the marked white group would likely allow black to build a wall facing it. With that in mind it makes sense to try and reduce by extending at b or c, because that would also strengthen my cover my weakness. c was my first instinct because b feels too passive, but I think it's likely to get cut off, so I'll go for b, which will hopefully give me a better position to attack from next turn.

I think he made a good move; his position is beginning to look imposing.

My "blitz reaction" told me to protect my development on the top.

But the marked stone is another one of those strange moves that jumped out at me and some feeling I can't explain makes me want to try it. Looks like I'm playing another move (like O17) based on a sort of defiant gut feeling I can't articulate rather than knowledge.

It looks wrong because it lets him into my moyo fairly easily and is so high for a capping move. But when I wonder why I want to play this move, all I can guess is that I feel a need for some presence in the bottom half of the center. My other feeling is that truly skilled players who look for points in the center and play with moyos/thickness don't really try to simply close it off as territory/keep the opponent out at all costs. Something about just trying to close my one big area off just feels wrong and bad to me, and a waste of a strong position somehow. I do not know how to play like they do, but I feel like I need to experiment with new things to have any hope of improving in that regard. And if this move fails, perhaps seeing the way in which it fails will grant me some further insight. I guess the bottom line is that I'm happy as I play this move, which I suppose is reason enough.

EDIT:N11 as a response too good for him?

No move yet. I just thought I should let you know that I'm going to be really busy over the next week and a bit and so I probably won't be making my move any time soon. I may make a move if I decide that's how I fell like spending my breaks, but I won't be making extra time for it.

For konfuzed, after the game:

If that's your intention, then :b45: is clearly the wrong direction, as you are forcing W to walk directly into your top:

Re: #180 Splatted vs konfuzed

On first glance Konfuzed's move seems to invite me to jump into his territory and reduce the detritus out of it, and that's probably what I'm going to do, but I have to be careful because he's clearly looking for a fight. It's a surprise to me that he's willing to risk so much territory here, but I think he's probably right not to just wall it off because my estimate puts me quite comfortably ahead if I can manage to make territory in the center.

Actually, I'm not sure he is looking for a fight. I was looking at how :b45: doesn't form a border with the Q12 stones, but now I see that it works really well with his stones on the left. If I jump in and reduce on the top right, he can use the M11 stone to make territory on the left. Compare the two diagrams below.

Black makes a similar amount of territory in both, but in the second one white is playing dame.

My first instincts for dealing with this are a and b in the diagram below.

a is the obvious move to stop black making territory in that area, but it doesn't really appear to do anything else. It's a weak stone that I can't really afford to lose and seems unlikely to end up being anything more than a dame stone, so I don't really like it.

b is an attempt to try and fix that by playing a move that faces my strength and so might turn in to territory. It's pretty much just a different version of my pre :b45: plan, which may or may not be a good thing, but I think it's important to try and find moves that are good for me rather than just bad for black. The main problem I have with this move is that I'm not sure I can afford to let black push down on it.

This seems good for my left side, but I'm not sure I can allow black to gain strength with :b2: and :b4: because it makes the peeps (or maybe even cuts) at a and b much more severe. I don't think I have any choice but to connect against them, after which they'll easily connect to black's three stones in the center and my group may be in trouble. I think this would be good for me if I can allow it though, so I'm going to have to consider it in more detail later.

Just a couple of thoughts for now.

I was planning on building up the left because closing off the top and giving him more strength in the bottom center felt wrong to me, but his move kind of makes me want to try to get the top and then try to create any complication I can to ruin the bottom half. First instinct was the marked stone.

I think if I don't play this move he has a simple way to reduce me on top. With the way the board currently looks I don't think it's easy for me to get enough compensation for that on the left. I think now that I played this move he will have a fight on his hands if he doesn't want me to have the top. I feel like I need to take the fight to him on the bottom one way or another to keep a balance of territory regardless.

This is another slightly impulsive move, but hopefully it will work out fine. :D

The idea of this move is to connect L9 and O10 to strengthen both and possibly create the wall I wanted. There are two things I'm worried about though. The first is that black might decide to cut like in the diagram below.

Actually I take that back; this looks great for white! Before I looked at the diagram I thought that would leave the O10 stones too weak while black could connect to the stones on the bottom, but white definitely has the advantage in this fight.

The other (now only) thing I'm worried about is that black won't cut. If black just walls off his territory and I do the same, I'll have let him redraw the borders in a much better place for him, and that suggests that my last few moves have been too passive.

Either he doesn't let me connect and seal him and I get a bit stronger in sente or I can 100% seal his group by playing g13. I'd like this group to be safe before I start invading the bottom; the left-center is still open and it seems helpful to have a group that is already very strong facing that hole in what he is looking to build, as opposed to a potentially attackable group.

@konfuzed and anyone following the game:

I just wanted to apologise for playing so slowly. I've been spending ages on each move because I wanted to wait until I had the time to really analyse the position and come up with an astoundingly good move, but I always end up deciding I've waited too long and making the move in less time than I would if I'd made it immediately, so from now on I'm going to try and treat this like a normal correspondence game for which I have to justify my moves. Hopefully that way I'll feel more comfortable playing quicker, but I'll still get the Malkovich benefit of thinking things through.

Observers only:

I think this move is pretty self explanatory, but I'll say it anyway: I'm trying to reduce black's territory. I'm also hoping it will work well with a move at a to turn that area in to territory for me.

The cut at b could be a problem, but that's a fight I'm willing to fight. I was worried that geeting cut at both ends of the L9 stones could be disastrous, but right now I think black's center stones are too weak to pull it off.

About Konfuzed's move: It's quite big but I think the center is bigger, and possibly more importantly, his move is completely gote, while a center play wouldn't have been. (Or am I missing something).
