After 35 years, Go World will cease publication after the next issue. “We regret to inform you that there will only be one more issue, #129, of Go World published,” Richard Bozulich writes in a letter now being received by subscribers. “After that Kiseido will cease publication.” “By relieving ourselves of the burdens of putting out Go World, we can devote ourselves to putting out some other kinds of publications,” Bozulich tells the EJ. For example, “We will be publishing a new book on December 5 titled, Fight Like a Pro — The Secrets of Kiai.” And, adds Bozulich, “After I publish this book, I am going to work on another project aimed at teaching go to children, called How to Develop a Photographic Memory and Turn Your Child into a Genius. Of course there will be more than go in the contents, but go will be the centerpiece.” Published continuously since 1977, Go World was for many years the sole source of go news and instruction for Western players, who eagerly awaited each quarterly issue, packed with instructional articles on tactics and strategy for beginners and stronger players alike as well as articles on the background and history of the game. High production values were the magazine’s hallmark, from the full-color reproductions of go prints on the cover to detailed analyses of top international title matches, featuring Korean, Chinese and Japanese players. Bozulich and longtime go author John Power – who also collaborated on many now-classic go books – “inspired a new generation of go writers, publishers and journalists,” said American Go E-Journal Managing Editor Chris Garlock. “Go World set a standard for excellence, longevity and commitment to the game of go that we can only dream of achieving.” Click here to purchase the final issue of Go World.

Now the time has come.
Go wold is to end.
I've been expeciting this.
The internet is faster, less expensive.
But nevertheless, I feel sorry for its end.
Goodbye, Go World.
And thank you all, the people devoted to this project.
Your efforts made American go stronger.

Well I don't believe it. It's probably just a publicity stunt.

Re: "Endgame for Go World Magazine After 35 Years"
I'm sorry that publication will cease. I am fortunate to own every issue from #1 on. I can see why publication will be ending, though. I suppose it is just too expensive to produce things like a magazine on paper. For obvious reasons Go World has emphasized the Japanese go world and, for the past five to ten years the "action" in the go world and the interest of most Western fans has been in Korea and China.
Since the beginning, Go World has represented the highest standard of production. The articles, page layouts, type faces, photographs, and diagram production are all first rate! Go World magazine is an amazing archive that will not likely be superceded in the future. A thousand thanks to Richard Bozulich, John Power, and everyone else involved in the publication!

Only America? Perhaps this type of narrow thinking is part of the problem, though I suspect it is much deeper.
Go World's demise is shocking and sobering. A hobby without a literature (however sparse) is a lifeless beast. John Fairbairn's work is always welcome, but what else is there of such quality and originality in English? I am seriously considering a return to the chess world.

Newspapers are closing... this is not too unexpected in today's world.
Just don't forget the big news... Nintendo Power closed!

I never got to read any of the issues. Will they be made available electronically after the magazine closes down?

Yeah, I was saddened by this news, myself. Even though I haven't subscribed in years, nor have I even bought an issue off the shelf at the store. I just don't play as many games on Nintendo systems as I used to, so it was hard to justify the expense (and especially the storage space) for a magazine devoted wholly to Nintendo consoles. It used to be my favorite magazine, though. (Well, there was some tight competition, NP was the only one I subscribed to, due to budgetary constraints... and it looks like those other magazines have gone as well):

'tis the season for such things I suppose. Faking one's death wouldn't have the same impact the second time around.

The news of his own death was shocking news to Richard Bozulich as well. It was a bad news account which was not verified correctly before being posted and not a case of RB faking his own death. IIRC, the poster of the original story has since retracted the story with apologies to his readers.

You seem to be forgetting how this "bad news account" got started.

Re: "Endgame for Go World Magazine After 35 Years"
IIRC, RB was sick in the hospital and one of his friend said he might not be around anymore to the poster of the story. But there was no further sources to verify this story and the poster posted it as breaking news. So how does being sick in the hospital and not being verified by different sources lead you to conclude that RB faked it?

Re: "Endgame for Go World Magazine After 35 Years"
David Ormerod of Gogameguru, which published and retracted the story, wrote here on L19 that Richard Bozulich had played "a fairly ridiculous and cruel prank" on him in the previous year. I assume that tricking him into publishing a false obituary was what David was referring to.
Patience, grasshopper.

Re: "Endgame for Go World Magazine After 35 Years"
Any reasonable journalist should always try to verify such a shocking report before passing it on as news. Just because the journalist made such a terrible mistake doesn't mean that the responsibility falls on the person who is the subject of the false story.
