1. Review all games from "Invincible".
2. Go through "1001 Life and Death Problems" (maybe several times), paying most attention to accuracy of reading.
3. Instead of playing hundreds of useless blitz games on KGS/IGS, switch to slow play on DGS.

It's silly to make "shodan" your resolution.
Don't resolve to reach a goal, instead resolve to do stuff.
For example, "I will do tsumego for at least three hours a week".

I don't think it's silly. By striving for this goal, of course I've got to do the work to get there. :P

I wouldn't agree with the word silly but I think shorter term, definitely achievable goals are better. Something like: "I'd like to be KGS Shodan by the end of the year. Therefore this year I set myself the target of playing 500 games on KGS, 100 on DGS, both with reviews, work through the following problem books ... and read the following theory books ..." If you have the free time none of these goals have the potential for failure.

Well that's just my opinion anyway.

Well, not having stated a plan, does not mean there isn't one.

No but the focus is different and the conditions for feeling like a success or failure are also different. If I did all that and wasn't shodan it wouldn't be a failure since the goals would have been achieved.

Well to me, the goal is getting up to shodan. Doing tsumego, reading books, playing and reviewing games is thus implied. Saying all that wouldn't change anything (to me) - at the end of the year what counts is whether or not I reached shodan. And if I didn't I want to be able to say I did my best. But it's hard to put a number on what it takes upfront.

Not even end of January and I already failed :(
If you say no, Elwood and I will come here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the week.

It did seem tough. :) Perhaps a goal of not doing something, and one that does not go so far as abstinence is pretty difficult. I've had some success in other endeavors by restricting an activity to specific times (not on Monday, not on the weekend, etc.), but this approach isn't for everyone. It might be better to reframe your plan in positive terms, determining instead what you will do.

None. Resolutions are aji-keshi.
Main Entry: zing·er Pronunciation: \ˈziŋ-ər\
1 : something causing or meant to cause interest, surprise, or shock
2 : a pointed witty remark or retort

My resolutions are much more humble: I want to reach 5 kyu again, and set myself on the road to 4 kyu.
Still 6 kyu. :-|

Well, I just made 1k? 1d? on KGS tonight, so that counts, right? Of course I only played two games since August.

- Still be playing Go at the end of the year
- Improve a bit, specifically my knowledge of tesuji and life and death, also play several hundred games
- Make a Lego Goban (floor board) - not full size, just 19 by 19 'bumps' across - then keep it on my desk at work.

Res. 1 - done!
Res. 2 - I think so, I'm currently 8kyu on DGS. Not done the several hundred games bit.
Res. 3 - nope, though it might have gotten stolen as I've only been in the office on about 20 days this year.

That should be my resolution for this year.

I'd fail it in about 20 days, but it would be a beautiful resolution anyways.

If explanation is needed: My second daughter is born some weeks ago and I am obliged to use my time on more productive things at work and at home. Go is a very nice and addictive game but it is too much self-contained and unproductive for the other aspects of my life. The time I spend on playing Go or solving tsumego or watching a pro game is completely useless for anything else than Go. Ok, there are many other things like that (e.g. watching TV, eating chocolate, drinking coffee, etc) but none of these other things takes as much time and concentration as Go, at least in my case. I will continue having a look and eventually posting every now and then in these forums, but I will try to restrict it as well.

That's my 2012 Go resolution.

Very few posts here, but I figured this is the place to say hello at this point...

I can completely see where the above is coming from. I just began this game last year, and in two weeks, my fifth child is being born, I am starting another semester at my second degree, and I still have a full-time job to attend to. That being said, my resolution: Play one serious game per week and post the results to the play journal area of this forum (that I have yet to start...), and play at least 5 and no more than 50, tsumego per day from goproblems.com

Yeah, I'm masochistic...

EDIT: OOOPSSS! I didn't even realize this was a zombie thread from last year,
