limiting image sizes
Would it be possible to implement a size limit to images, or a converter that downscales the images to a vaguely readable size? I get tired of opening threads to download a bunch of 3 to 4 MB images that really don't need that level of detail, and I can't imagine it's good for the site's bandwidth.

I don't want to go around just naming names, but for the sake of example:
The tatami mat thread has some current offenders:

In the past, I remember some of the go equipment ones and the go study space thread have as well, though in the latter, the images seem to have been changed or downsized since.

Oh, yeah. That kind of image is too big for me to really see in my browser, anyway.

Images via the 'Img' tag already have a limit. However, attachments do not. Most of us post images as attachments. There are two issues:
One is having large files that can slow down loading. Different formats and default settings give (sometimes radically) different file sizes for the same size image. It is not clear to me what the effect of picking a limit would be.
The other is large-size images that will distort the presentation of the page. The instructions on using 'hide' tags to prevent this when a page first loads are not included in the existing stickies on posting here IIRC.
When I started posting graphs made from GoGoD data I was using Img tags. I found the limit on image size very frustrating as it prevented the posting of sufficiently clear images. At the same time, I personally hate to load an ongoing discussion and find that a super-sized image attachment has reduced all the text to pin-head size. I have my doubts that there is a one-size-fits-all solution available.
